I started suffering from a common cold in May this year. Eventually I went to see my GP who prescribed the usual antibiotics and cortisone. Things did not get better though. I started coughing in a bad way, something which I'm not used to.
On the 25th of August we went on a short visit to our West Coast but I was feeling BAD and did not enjoy anything anymore. I spent the week down there in bed, coughing all the time, no sleep, could not eat and, worst of all, could not smoke my pipe! On the 29th of August we came back home and my wife had to drive as I felt like I was dying. She dropped me at the emergency section of our local hospital on our arrival home where I was diagnosed with septicemia and heart failure. Spent one day in icu and another 7 days in the ward.
On the 5th of September I was sent home because the septicemia was cured. I've gained 17kg during my stay in hospital because of all the fluid that was pumped into my body to fight the inflammation. I could hardly walk and I was still coughing like when I went to hospital.
On the 8th of September I went to see another doctor who rushed me to hospital because of heart failure, straight off into icu for 4 days! So, according to the first doctor, I was cured, just to land up in icu again. Also spent another 6 days in ordinary ward before I was sent home.
During the time in hospital I did not crave tobacco at all which I found very strange indeed. While I was smoking cigarettes, I could hardly stay without smoking for more than a day. This time round I did not smoke and inhale for more than a month. And up till now, I did not inhale any smoke because I'm scared of what will happen if I do.
So, I'm on the mend. I still feel weak but I move around the house with no problems at all. Also drove my car yesterday.
The best about this whole thing is that I'm now enjoying my pipe WITHOUT inhaling the smoke!!! Never thought I would be able to do that. I smoked cigarettes for many years and am used to inhaling.
I now know that I can and do enjoy smoking my pipes like I do when I'm smoking a cigar, no need to inhale any smoke. This came as quite a revelation to me.
