Show me your dottle

Hey everyone. I thought I'd give my 0.5 cents worth here. There seem to be some pipes in my retinue that always smoke well to the bottom and some which do not. Naturally, I gravitate to the ones which do. That said, if the smoke gets unpleasant I dump the ash road and relight. This seems to work most of the time. I do make a point of only leaving the untouched tobacco.

If it happens that it burns all the way to the absolute bottom, great. But if my tobacco goes out near the bottom I sacrifice it because I don't like the idea of relighting with not much tobacco to protect the bottom of the chamber or draught hole entrance from scorching. I don't actually have any empirical data to support this fear but it seems like sucking the match flame directly into the draught hole, because I've overestimated the dottle, probably isn't good.
