As a computer techie guy and someone who understands the importance of network security(working for a company that is not only a data center for, but produces financial software for banks), the ability to crack into a computer and 'take over' a webcam through an exploit in Skype would not only be pretty difficult, but honestly hacking one of OUR webcams and mics would probably just not be worth it. We're not that important at all.
Also, don't let the naysayers fool you; if the computer is off, there's no way the mic is still running. even if it was running, it would have nowhere to store audio logs to be picked up later(hard drive being off and such), and the network interface card(NIC) would have to still be on and active to transfer data. In most cases, that would require the use of a hard line plugged directly into the computer, not wifi(if you use wifi), and on a laptop you'd notice if it were on. The lights around the plug where you insert the ethernet cable are designed to be on and functioning if power is flowing through the NIC.
Long story short, if I were you Cart I wouldn't worry one bit.
That being said, I'm extremely interested in Skype conversations amongst us. I use Skype pretty regularly, and would be inclined to share my Skype username with anyone who asks.
