So. How did popular music ever go from this...

...to the likes of Britney Spears and her clones? (i.e. Heavily processed, AutoTune dependent, wimpy & weak vocals, all in the service of riff-based repetitious "songs" utterly lacking in melody)

This is 100% live, taped in a living room. One bare-bones guitar, one voice. Epic. (be sure to let it play to the end... she pulls out the stops for the final chorus)

I can't get freaky with a chick out on the dance floor at a club with that stuff!

I've actually always loved her singing. The other thing that has bothered me about the music industry, especially when it comes to women singers, is that looks are so much a factor. I've known some girls that give me goose bumps every time I heard them sing but they didn't look like much and were never given a chance. Linda had it all though.

As a side note, Hugh was a fricken stud in the day.

I like the music you sent Greg yesterday WAY better... Theremin rocks!!!!

Wonderful! And, even a bonus PIPE SIGHTING in the beginning.

It's hard to believe there was a time when singers actually had to sing on pitch, and didn't rely on technical gimcrackery or warbling all around the note to hit it. The former saves some second-rate vocalists, and turns them into pop stars. The latter is just plain irritating.

Techno wizardry???

Funny you bring up Country. By far the musicians who place the highest value on authentic musicianship are the trad Country guys. (The Modern Country stuff has been merging with Pop for years, but not the traditional.) What you hear coming off the stage with that crowd is the real deal, and they don't fool around. Tell Ricky Skaggs you're going to run him through an FX rack and watch what happens.

True Country music is dead for all intent and purpose.... (yes you can find it if you look real real real hard, but I'm talking Country Stations, Country Concerts, you know, common place Country)

Few 'country stars' even have a clue what country is. Country became so 'popular' that it became pop music...
I remember way back when listening to Hank Jr and thinking... "Man this dude is cool, but that aint country".. Listen to him now he sounds so outdated...

Depends on how you define it. It's definitely commercially dead, but among those who play it, and the clubs that feature it, the fire burns hot. Same with Rockabilly, Swing/Jump Blues, Bluegrass, and the like. Most Americana/Roots styles haven't been heard on broadcast airwaves for half a century, but what's being played today is the best there's ever been. Attend a festival and be amazed.

Yeah but that's not what I meant... lol...

Truthfully I'm not a huge Country Music fan, but I do hate what has happened to it.

And Clarification...Ricky aint Country.. He's Bluegrass. :D

I'm completely with you there LL, I was an avid Celtic-Bluegrass festival goer, and participant while living in Dallas, TX. For about $10 admission, you can go all day, see as many real musicians as you can stand, eat festival foods and treats, shop, get autographs of the musicians, get a sun tan/burn. There is still great music out there ... performed by musicians who actually give a damn about the music and their performance.

Great music can still be had almost any night of the year in Austin, TX and some great 'sessions pubs' are still around, so if you play anything and want to learn in 'music boot camp' find one and join in!

Exceptions prove the rule. This present-day lass absolutely kicks King Kong-sized butt, and does it honestly. No processing, just a loop recorder so she doesn't need a backing band. (Of course, no one's heard of her, or probably ever will)

Imagine having this level of talent and being ignored.

Happens everyday, to thousands, maybe tens of thousands of people.

Can't listen now though... Steelers/Browns on nfl.com... Browns winning.. sacked Big Ben 5 times, Cribbs looking like a hero.. but its been all field goals so far

I'll bet in a survey fewer than 1 in 10,000 people would recognize the name. Compare that to Miley Cyrus (who is about 5% as musical)

10-4 on being a fan. How can anyone who hears her play not be, though?

Black horse and the cherry tree.... lots of people know OF her...
A fair number know the song, but not her. And three fourths of them associate it with an American Idol contestant.

It seems that looking like a centerfold is now the most basic requirement in music. Without it you can't even get started anymore.

Ummm... Maybe, on the Idol comment....

Definatly on the Looks comment. Music somehow became Visual..

Video killed the Radio star.

Among types of music I love Bluegrass is a part of the herd. but I will listen to allo sorts of music from big band, western swing, country, jazz, classical, folk, pop, etc. Even occasionally something like rap, but it would be an exceptional piece of rap for me to listen to it.

Now if you accept that 90% of all music is crap, and try to find the 10% that is worthwhile, you can find good stuff in most genres. And not all the new stuff is inferior to the old stuff. For me much as I like listening to Bill Monroe, I actually find modern entries like The Seldom Scene much more satisfying. And for my money Bluegrass is a subset of the genre country, not a seperate enity. You want to here something that will play with your mind, check out the recordings of "Hayseed Dixie". (I am on dial up, so I am not going to find the posting on Utube for you

) HD is a bluegrass band playing primarily heavy rock and metal tunes, and the name is a play on words for AC/DC

. But they have covered Nugent, Floyd, etc. and give a totally different sound to well known sounds.

As for radio stations, WSM still does two bluegrass shows a week last time i looked, and the Opry still features bluegrass performers. As for festivals they are every where, try taking in the Bean Blossom Festival in Indiana for instance, or look at the appearance schedules of Rhanda Vincent & the Rage, or Allison Krauss and Union Station. And both those ladies can sing, and aren't hard on the eyeballs either.

I saw Allison at the Bell County fair about 13-14 years ago when she wasn't a godess... just a lil girl with a killer fiddle and a voice that put even that to shame....
