Some more info on Charatans

Was "browsing"  this afternoon and came across this info on some Charatan's with LOTS of pics on a German site! Sadly it has no English translation of the info, but it does have LOTS of pics of those much loved "...miss drilled Golf clubs" as some here like to describe 'em  :twisted: ( not as I would describe 'em, but then I like and smoke 'em :twisted: )

Those are some very nice Charatans on that site.  I'm trying to find a picture of a shape Charatan made called the "Countryman".  It's been replicated by James Upshall and most recently Northern Briars, but I can't find a Charatan example.

Manfred Arenz
Founded in 1863 by Frederik Charatan, Charatan pipes is one of the oldest brands on the planet.
Long time were the pipes of this manufacturer as the quality most of England, still renowned as Dunhill .
Charatan was in the 30s one of the first to Freehands produced, long before Stanwell / Ivarsson . Until 1973, all pipes were made ​​entirely by hand, from 1973 to the low grades with mechanical assistance.
In 1977 the brand name was on the competitors Dunhill sold. Evil tongues say that Dunhillsecured the gems from the Charatan factory itself, and sold as "Collector". In fact, the Charatan brand experienced a decline, until they disappeared in the late 80 times from the market. Meanwhile Charatans reappear, but they are now in France (in BC made).

Ivy what Ryan describes in her mid as famous article, is the time for their assessment of each unique manufacturing Charatan Pipe by a single craftsman.
Nevertheless, in so far remained Charatan a traditional English manufacturer, as these artisans were largely anonymous, does not go to individuals up and down the brand. In this respect there was no difference to Dunhill , BBB , GBD and other major brands.

One of the rarest in the world Pipes: A Royal Achievement.
The gold band bears the stamp of L & S Les Wood and the hallmark "K" (= 1983). The grain is immaculate, the whistle of huge dimensions (6 cm high, 20 cm long). Only the mouthpiece is (as with most of the 80 Charatans) performed somewhat clumsy.

The picture shows a FreeHand from before Dunhill is seen.
The pipe is fitted about 19 cm long and with a perfect and tight straight grain grain. No spot, no Kittstelle.
The pipe can stand by itself on the two "feet" on the head.
Quality: "Selected, Freehand Extra Large" from the period 1960-1965. Price: 400 back then - DM (200, - €), now several hundred dollars on ebay bid for such a piece. Today a Selected XL costs 700 - €

These Freehand comes from the time before the takeover by Dunhill.
The pipe has a decent grain, no spots and of course no glued parts. The size of these Freehand is remarkable.

The picture shows a typical older Charatan "Distinction" with a shorter stem.
The Straight Grain is only on one side, the back is textured flat. However, the pipe is putty and spot free.

Here is a 30 year old Freehand Charatan, for their shape, there is hardly a name ... Pot? - Prince? - 9s iron? ... It is hard to keep in the mouth, but otherwise technically smoke is top notch!

I saw this shape several years ago and it stuck in my mind. James Upshall made it and Northern Briars frequently makes the shape. I've read it was used by apprentice pipe makers to show their skills and earn their stripes. I've passed on a few Northern Briars, because of the size. They are always large. But I couldn't resist the genuine article.
