Sparkless/ Zeppelin pipe

My grandfather had one of those sparkless zeppelin pipes that I have been fascinated by since I was a young child, and now I am thinking of buying/making one for myself. My question is how do you pack and smoke them? I cannot find any info on how to smoke them

I haven't seen one of these since I was maybe 12. As I recall they load from the front so its more like smoking a cigar. Morgan pipes makes a more modern version that looks like a briar cigar. They look interesting but I really couldn't say how they smoke.
