Hello all! I am somewhat new to the forum, but not new to pipe smoking. I, like the rest of you, have taken notice of the Mac Baren and Sutliff takeover, and like many of the rest of you, I have taken steps to make sure I have my favorite blends collared. That being said, I want to start by sharing a conversation I had with, I believe his name was Todd, from LJ Peretti.
I decided to make my first ever order from LJ Peretti and due to my own mistake, the same order was made four times. Yeah....I can be a bit impatient sometimes and it can sometimes bite me. Anyway, I contacted Peretti and they were quick to call me and resolve the issue. While on the phone with the pipe maker, I asked his take on the takeover. He first off assured me that it would in no way affect them, as they do their blending strictly in-house. He also gave mayne the first optimistic take I think I've heard on the matter, which was very refreshing! It is his opinion that even though some of the sutliff/mac baren blends would likely disappear, he seems to think many of the popular ones would still be produced, and he believes that the blenders that use sutliff would find a way to continue, and I agree with him. In his words(paraphrsing), as long as there is a market and therefore money to be made, there will likely be a product.
Obviously, that's one man's opinion, but it is also a man very involved in the industry. That being said, even with the possibility of all of the blends disappearing(which doesn't seem likely), can we please tone down the pessimism!? Really, it's depressing! I even see it from many youtuber who I respect amd enjoy watching, and not only when it comes to the stg situation, but in general. For example, I can't tell you how many times I've heard "pipe tobacco will never be cheaper than it is now", and while that may be possible or even likely, I'm just not into the defeatist mindset that seems to have taken over a world that is supposed to be , kind of the opposite, a hobby of peace, relaxation and optimism. I don't want to come off as a hypocrite, because I have done my share of panicking, but I think we all need to relax. I am going to continue to enjoy this hobby as I have in the past, cellar up so far as I can truly afford to, and most importantly put my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ first, trusting Him to continue to bring the joy to the hobby and my life that He always has! I hope this doesn't come across as judgemental, because I'm speaking to myself as well. I just think we're not helping each other or ourselves by being so pessimistic. The more you keep saying things like "tobacco is never going to be cheaper than it is now", the quicker manufacturers are going to be to jack the prices up. There is nothing wrong with being prepared and aware, but let's not make that job easier for them.
Anyway, that's my take, probably comes across as more of a rant lol. I just hate to see a hobby that is supposed to bring us calm and relaxation fall into world of defeat and negativity.
