Hello all,

So, about storing bulk flakes, how do you guys do it? is there a good jar that you can lay them down flat in, or some other way to keep them airtight, laying flat, that you know of?

-Mike.

I usually just lay the jar, small jelly size, about 4 oz., I think, on it's side and slide the flakes in until no more will fit. Tighten down the lid, label the contents and stick it in the cellar.

Not as easy to find as the pint and half pint jars, but I found the 12 oz. jars are straight sided (like the 8 oz. using the same lids as pints and quarts) and long enough to store the flakes in slices with little to no "trimming" (depending on the brand). Rather loosely packed, I can get about 1/3 pound +/- in these jars. The only down side is they have those damned ornamental diamonds on the outside like jelly jars. Rather pretty if filled with strawberry preserves, but preventing an unobstructed view if you want to see your tobacco clearly.

Natch

Usual procedure with FVF bulk has been to trim (scissors) the sliced flakes to fit into the jars (usually 6 inches) upright. The leftover end trimmings get jammed into their own jelly jar.

FWIW

I know that I am going to get a lot of nay sayers here but unless my bulk came to me in a plastic baggy, I store it in the original box or package (ie Sam Gawith, Stokkebyes, Esoterica etc) that it came in. I only buy these in box quantities so needing to transfer to a jar rarely becomes an issue.

However, let me qualify this by saying that like my cigar collection, these reside in a number of coleman coolers (I am currently up to 3) that also contain a humidifying device to keep the internal humidity at an appropriate level for safe storage without concern about mold, etc. I use large blocks of floral foam with a water/propolyne glycol solution so it handles both low and excess humidity situations. These, along with my jars and tins, reside in our basement where the temp never gets higher than 70degF. Even bulk in bags often gets tossed into a cooler until I get the time and ambition to transfer it to jars.

For jars I prefer the 8oz jam jars, I get 90gm of most tobaccos into one of these without excess packing (5 jars/lb) and I like the full sized mouth for easy loading.

This has worked for me for years and other than the expense of buying an additional cooler from time to time it is a great system IMHO.

I use pint jars and cut a 5 or 6" flake in half. Other than appearance, I don't know what the utility is in not cutting flake. 3" is plenty long to do what is typically done with flake, rubbing it out or the fold and stuff technique.

I can't imagine putting tobacco into any kind of container such as a cooler when it has not been jarred first.

Big square jars. They don't stack so good, but they sure is pretty! :D
I was thinking of getting a bunch of these instead of canning jars. The description says they're airtight and stackable.

Have stored bulk flakes upright in the large mason jars for years; no problems !

Why do you care about them laying flat? I know you must have a good operative reason so I look forward to hearing it. Please though, no alien abduction prevention stories nor any references to 'natural law'.

We see a variety of presentations for flake from manufacturers. One is particularly suggestive. Reiner sends out their Long Golden Flake in a small round paint tin. And the flake is one long strip coiled within the tin. Fun!

Do thou likewise; coil the flakes in small mason jars that are sized for your consumption.

I find that if the flakes are not lain flat they tend to break and become malformed, unless they are packed very densely inside my mason jars.

4 ozs of flake from lb bulk, 100 g from 500 g bulk: jar the increments and that will yield unbent flake. Yes, the jar must be full.
