Duraflame SOB Matches from Meijer have been my best bet... Light fast, stay lit, no breaking, no head flying off, quick to get rid of sulpher. 2.99 for 3 boxes of 250. I'm planning on snipping the box when I get through the first one and attaching the striker to something handy (the inside panel of my covered porch, maybe one on the underside of the shelf of my grill, one on my wallet... havent quite figured out the logistics yet) so i can just bring a match or two outside with me or keep matches "loose" with my tobacco and forego the box, but still maintain safety/ not have to deal with sub par matches or go bac to my bic

The SOB ones are OK when I'm sitting at home, in the vehicle, or like tonight at the hard-to-find hotel that has smoking rooms but for some situations I want the SA's.

Before plunking down big bucks on the ebay ones I decided to continue my quest this morning on the way to work. I was past one supermarket before I realized it but stopped at 3 others. All had only SOB's, Diamond green, and 2 store brand, one of which looked like they might be red. I did stop at a Family Dollar and pick up 2 boxes of their red SOB. Coming out of one store I noticed a cigar shop across the street. They didn't have any but the guy behind the counter said that there were still a couple supermarkets that carried SA's but he didn't recall which ones. He said I could find them at Army Navy stores as well.

Fortunately there is an A/N store the next town over in the direction I was headed. Imagine my surprise when the guy there pointed to his inventory and all the larger size SA matches were the older Diamond red tips. His penny size were all the new green matches and realizing that this would be his eventual restock I bought out all 6 packages of 3 boxes each at a unit price of about half what I would have paid for a whole case of Penley's off ebay. I'm hoping, supplementing with green ones when I can use them, that 4500 matches will be a lifetime supply for me.

I use almost two boxes of 350 matches a month so 4500 matches would last me about 6 1/2 months :p

I hadn't yet calculated my usage to this point but I do use quite a few even smoking just a bowl a day but that's why I was actually considering buying the case of Penleys. I'll judiciously use the Diamond red tip SA's for only the times I really need them and SOB's and green SA's the rest of the time.

I've gone through a number of the assorted boxes of SOB matches that I picked up a few months ago and figured I'd give a bit of a report for anybody searching on the finer points of matches. I avoided getting any of the green tip ones though I do have some in the SA category. They work about as well on the box strip as the lesser of the SOB ones I got so I've been occasionally using them as much as to use them up as for any reason. The red-tip ones I got from the Family Dollar appear to be very similar to the ones I got at Giant. They work OK but often take more than one swipe to get them lit and by the time I reach the end of the box it's getting hard to find a spot on the strip that has enough surface left to light the match.

The other brand I got were Penley. I was expecting them to be the same as the Giant ones as the lot stamping on the end of the boxes are nearly identical. However it must be that they just use the same type of machine to do the printing. The Penley's are definitely superior to the others. They usually light on the first swipe and it can be a very short one at that. The strip on the box is also superior in durability. These are harder to find but there are a couple places near where I work on Long Island occasionally that stock them so I've stocked up a bit in anticipation of the time coming when I won't be working there any more. With tax I pay a little over $1 per box in a 3-pack so they are not expensive.

Brothers through the proper application or rather miss application of science sobs may indeed be converted into sa matches. I must stress however that doing so is at your own risk and will invalidate any warranties, etc. The process is not complicated but is inherently dangerous. If further information is requested it will be provided via pm. Also yes it works as I have done this myself in the past.

I recall my pyromaniac friend lighting his strike-anywheres on his jeans... which he then would squirt zippo fluid on and set aflame.
He should try squirting it in the palm of his hand. It's more fun that way :D

Savinelli has posted something on YouTube that says you should light up with Swedish matches. What is so special about them that would inspire this endorsement?
