Until recently, I traveled a lot for work. Last year I spent an average of 2 nights/week in motels. Thankfully, that's coming to an end. During that time, though, I tried a few different systems for carrying pipes and smoking supplies. I thought I'd share the improvised pipe case I settled on, so here it is:

That's a Maxpedition EDC Fatty organizer, found here:
http://www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/Fatty-Pocket-Organizer-14p1654.htm

Do a quick YouTube search for "maxpedition edc", and you'll find everyone from IT geeks to zombie hunting survivalists showing off this same pouch packed with all sorts of useful things. I've yet to see one loaded up like this, though:

These are amazingly tough little pouches, and when packed to the gills like mine is, they hold an insane amount of stuff, such as:

3 or 4 pipes. I had 6 Washington cobs in there once, but that was just silly.
2 or 3 ounces of baggied tobacco
Zippo lighter plus a butane back-up
Czech tool plus a spare pipe nail
That DeKrallinger snuff box had been modified to be a match dispenser. There's a striker glued to the back, and it has the added benefit giving a little whiff of Prins Regent with every strike. :)
Small flashlight for inspecting bowls in dim light
2 small pocket knives, one with its own tiny light
Folding pipe rest
Spare reading pipe-packing glasses in an old velour pipe sock
Snuff box that actually has snuff in it
Handkerchief (for wiping down pipes; the snuff hanky stays out of the pipe case)
Wind cap
Chapstick
Breath mints
100 or so pipe cleaners
and an empty Vanilla Flake tin that I use either as a tobacco drying tray or occasional ashtray

The specific load changes all the time, but you get the idea. As I said, this is a very durable little pouch. The 1000 denier nylon is triple poly-coated. If submerged, of course, the zipper will leak, but otherwise it'll keep everything nice and dry. One other nice thing about it: it complies with rule #27 of Man Law.
RULE #27: If you absolutely must carry a purse, chose one that looks like it might have grenades in it.
No one will mistake this for Seinfeld's European carry-all!

Just thought you guys might like to see that.

I have a pair of Jumbo Fatboy Versipak "S" Types.
One I use for pipes & tobacco, the other is a "bail out" bag w/ IFAK.
Maxpedition makes great gear. I also use Martin Wess leather pipe bags that I carry inside of a Teton Sports Professional Backpack for pipe shows or Pipe Club Meetings.

I like those, GK! Looks similar to my field case, well...content anyway, mine's still "pleather" (it was cheap). I'm gonna look into getting a more rugged solution like that.

Good for those who work on the road like some of us, good "SHTF" bug-out kit for pipers... Too cool.

Awsome looking bag & bonus that it looks like it'll hold 4 pipes easy. (My 2 pipe bag is to small).
Thanks for showing that square shanked bent cob where did you find it what was the model #/name & cost. To cool got to have one.

Awesome bag George, I love maxpedition, I have one of their backpacks for hikes / weekends away. Very high quality and well thought out products.

Most excellent my friend, just ordered one - $23 on Amazon!

Also got a 5lbs bag of Gummy Bears for $12. This is a good day.

That would be the illusive MM Bulldog. Rumor is they may be re-release within the next couple years.

for folk's like me who are wrapped a little to tight..

Same one? That price is cheaper, if that's the case. Plus, I can add on some stupid book or something and get free shipping. Got a link?

Just make sure it's the "Fatty" model and not the regular EDC, which is a lot thinner.

Looking at the Maxpedition site, I noticed they now have one called the "Beefy" that looks like a larger version of the Fatty. I may have to look into that. Not that I need to carry more stuff, but with my current load it takes some doing to get it closed. Otherwise the next step up would be the Neatfreak shown above, which looks awesome but is a lot more expensive.
And yeah, Dover, I've been drooling over those Versipacks for some time. If I could justify the expense, they'd make a "satchel guy" outa me for sure.
Glad to see some of you guys share the love for Maxpedition. It's quality stuff!

Actually, this post was necessary for me GK, I was just thinking to myself I needed a little bit more pipe space than the cheapie pleather 5-pipe case, and something with zippers I can trust more. I have to pack light for the field, and that looks just about right: and at less than $30...well, hell yeah. Thanks!

Thanks for the compliment, Hawker. Sorry to disappoint you, but I've had that about 20 years and I honestly can't remember where it came from, nor can I verify its identity. Keep your fingers crossed for a new production run of MM bulldogs it the near future. If all goes well, we'll have some with a special BoB stamp.

what a great post! in January i start a new position at my work in the field every other week. looking for something besides my glovebox for storage. also my profession tends to frown upon tobacco use so it's best if hidden.

Glad I could be of some help, Mr Dumbjerk. :p I'm skeptical, miserly, and generally hard to please, yet I highly recommend these products. I wonder if Maxpedition will give me a discount for the extra website traffic I've generated for them today?

May I ask which model? I've nearly got myself convinced that I have a need for a medium-ish backpack. I've been eyeing the Falcon-II.

Forgot I had a close-up of my homemade matchbox. It's a deKralingse tap box with the little plastic grille cut out and two strips of box striker glued to the back label. It holds about 40 kitchen matches and fits nicely under the elastic straps in the bag.
