Hello everyone. I hopefully won't take up too much time with this introduction. I'm not exactly really good at introducing myself, so please bear with me.
As you can see my username is Serpov. I will also respond to Alexander though, but I prefer Serpov--which is actually a psedo-surname I use on many forums.
Although the name would suggest that I am Russian or Slavic, I am neither. I am in fact an American who doesn't have any Slavic linage, who lives in Florida.
I am 30 years old, and have been smoking a pipe since I was 16 years old. I originally smoked cigarettes but due to cost I felt that it would be wise to try a pipe. My first corn cob and pouch of Prince Albert changed everything. From that point on I was strictly a pipe man.
Over the past 14 years I've tried many types of pipes and types of tobacco. Personally I favor burley blends (Carter Hall, Prince Albert and the like) and good English Blends (I personally like bends with good latikia flavor, although perique is a good addition too), along with some Virginia blends--I'm particularly fond of MacBaren's Dark Twist. I generally do not like aromatic tobaccos (I will try them and in fact have several pipes dedicated to sampling them) but I do like some Cavendishs. I have found most aromatics smoke hot, are too wet and are generally not pleasing to me, despite the fact that others around me may think them to smell good. (But I don't smoke for other people's enjoyment, I smoke for mine.)
As far as pipes go, and this may actually shock some people. I prefer the humble corn cob to all else. I do have briars of course and a couple meerschaums but I still like the corn cob. In my opinion it is one of the best all around smokes and after they are broke in (some people say they don't need to be broken in--I disagree--a good bit of char, although not cake, on the inside of the bowel actually improves flavor in my opinion--and can be accomplished in about 5-7 smokes) they will service you for years if you clean them and take good care of them. I still have my very first corncob pipe and would smoke it--unfortunately I broke the bit inside the stem several years ago while cleaning it. But after serving me for a good 10 years I figure I got my money's worth out of it.
I do have briars, just not as many as corn cobs, some 90% of my collection are corn cobs and I have at least one of Missouri Meerschaum's current line except the freehand. Personally I prefer the Patriot and the General. Of my pipes I have a couple Canadian styles along with some billiards and a bulldog style. Most of them are basket finds. I know that a lot of people view them as second rate pipes--but I've found more diamonds in the rough than just roughs. When buying those one really has to inspect the merchandise. Remove the bit and look through it, the shank, where the air hole is in the bowl ect. And I also have a couple block meerschaums--but I don't smoke them as often as the briars or the corncobs.
Anyway that is probably enough about me, since I can't really think of much else to talk about.
