Now, now, Rev. Just because Big G is vengeful doesn't mean you get to be. Or just make sure He's taking an extended potty break.

Unfortunately you guys miss this little beauty on ebay today:

Hmmm... that one looks a lot like one I started working with:

But mine ended up looking like this:

I like the idea of the fan-shaped pipe, kind of an "elemental" design, polishing up the natural state of a chunk of briar as it came from wherever...

...I just can't see myself smoking it. I think it's the carver's version of taking a gessoed canvas, painting a simple, black shape on it, clear-coating it and calling it done. Sure, why not? Just not for me...

Well, it looks like a pipe, not just a display of carving technique. However, there are such things as scale and proportion, and that baby is H U G E!! In fact it crosses the border well over into "Throw Me At The Cat" rather than "Smoke Me" territory. So I'd say it's more of a curiosity, maybe a well made curiosity, but a curiosity, nonetheless. Simply increasing the size of a functional object doesn't enhance it, which probably accounts for the ambivalence this one attracts. OTOH, if it were smaller, the design would be out of date. But out-of-date designs have a stubborn fan base . . .
