This was one of the first tobaccos I smoked. The friend who got me interested in the pipe took me to JR, and I bought it along with Escudo and Erinmore Flake. I liked it but for some reason lost to memory put it aside; thus I find myself with a jar of it 7 years later. I opened it today, trying to recapture some of the past, but only took two or three puffs: and bang! what bite! After 7 years in the jar! If I had smoked the bowl I would have put a considerable hurt on my mouth, so I dumped it.

MacBaren has said that this Mixture is their flagship; I don't know who smokes it; it certainly doesn't get much airtime on BoB.

I shall put it down to rest once more and will contemplate opening it again in the year 2050. Seven years! and still a fiend. That's some tobacco.

I liked this baccy as well it was one of my first tins. Im sort of confused by your review though. It seems as if you are disappointed in it because it has tongue bite. ? ? Seven years and it hasnt mellowed?

Yes, it bites, even after 7 years it bites big-time!

But this wasn't a review, just a condemnation that no one aside from a very slow smoker could take this on.

I like Virginia #1.
It also has a rep as a dragon but it really doesn't bother me.
Blasphemy I know but I'd rather smoke Mac Barens as McClellands. Talk about dragons.

Body chemistry is an enigma.

Thx for the heads up. I was planning on buying some of this for the purpose of aging. Maybe not so much now.

Some can knock back 5-10 bowls a day, puffing like a chimney, but not me. If I'm going to smoke 3 bowls, they need to be separated by at least 4 hours time, and I have to be careful to smoke slowly, which I'm just learning how to do.

Like pb, it's all a matter of body chemistry; and my mouth is the home of sensitivity tissue.

I really enjoy Scottish Mixture. And yes, you'll get better results by smoking slow. Luckily I'm a very slow smoker, and have never had tongue bite.

MacBarens is well known for being bitey...some of their blends are still alright, but nothing I've ever had from them blew me away.
