Never got into Queen and Freddy Mercury. I was on another mission back then Ted, and was wrapped up in prog. That was the period I embraced Tull as my primary influence and it lasted for years.
These days, I can appreciate what Freddy brought to the table. But still not a "fan" in the strictest sense.
In fact, my studio engineer semi-recently showed me a pirated studio track of "Bohemian Rhapsody" where all of the original tracks were revealed. One could then listen to them individually, and Freddy's vox were without flaw.
And this was back in the day of pre-digital recording. All done on 2" 24-track tape. He sang flawlessly, and I was suitable impressed!
All to say, ya I came away with a new found respect for his vocal contributions. But still don't have any great fondness for Queen. Call it heresy or whatever, but there it is!
