McClellands Dark English

My tastes change often, and I'm a bit of a beginner to the world of, what I call, "top shelf pipe smoking," so I may be showing my ignorance with some of these.

Here's what I currently can't get enough of:

1. Tinder Box Philosopher Blend
not sure if any of yall have a local Tinder Box, but most of their house blends are pretty decent. But this one I like quite a bit. It's a fairly strong English.

2. Rattray's: Hal o the Wind
3. Peterson's Irish Oak
4. Tinder Box Wilshire Blend
their most popular aromatic
5. GLP Barbary Coast

1. Penzance (However I'm hoping my memory isn't beginning to fantasize about this one)

2. C&D Star of the East Flake

3. Low Country Cooper (This blend suffers from lack of exposure. I think it will be realized when people start trying it)

4. Nightcap

5. Balkan Sasieni

Current lineup:

1. Rattray's Red Rapparee

2. McClelland's Three Oaks Syrian (a very close second)

3. Esoterica's Margate (eyeing the top position from behind few oaks)

4. McClelland's Frog Morton on the Bayou

5. Rattray's Marlin Flake

For me:

1.SG FVF
2.Dunhill Nightcap (old stock)
3.Dunhill Aperitif (old stock)
4.Penzance
5.Rattray Red Rapparee

In no particular order:

Reiner LGF
Escudo
Stokkebye LNF
Dunhill EMP/Nightcap/SMM (I know, it´s 3)
GLP Fillmore

Honorable mention:
OGS

Hard to put only 5! I´ve left many off- just those I´d particularly enjoy at this moment.

FVF doesn´t even make the top 10 for me BTW

Rattary's Marlin Flake
Escudo Navy De Luxe
Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Brown Flake Unscented
Robert McConnell Scottish Cake
McClelland's Brindle Flake

Peterson's:

Irish Oak
Irish Flake
Irish Whiskey
Sunset Breeze

Erinmore Flake

1. Penzance
2. Margate
3. Balkan Sasieni
4. PA
5. Too many different blends have filled this slot; it's either this or a list of my top 40 :)

The order changes with the seasons and my taste now is mostly for Va & VaPers

3 Nuns

Capstan Navy Cut "Blue tin"

Escudo

Penzance

Union Square

Rattray's Hal O' The Wynd
Robert McConnell Scottish Cake
McClelland Three Oaks Syrian
Cornell & Diehl Three Friars
GL Pease Key Largo

but that is just the tip of the iceberg on a new pipe smoker's journey. Lots of tins in the cellar I haven't cracked yet.

As of 8.21.11, my top five awards go to........

JP Storm Front - Best Go To Mild Smoke
FVF - Best Sweet and Sassy
Penzance - Best Smooth Lat Bomb
Peretti's Royal Blend - Best Heady, Rich, After Dinner Smoke
Dunhill Standard Mild Mixture - Best Midday Quickie

Honorable Mention:
SG Perfection
SG Squadron Leader

I could live off the top five for a long time... but there is so much out there that you guys have turned me on to and I'm gonna try em' all...

Some on my must try list:
Boswell's Northwoods
Reiner's Long Golden Flake
Peretti's Cuban Mixture
Uhle's Burleys

Choose just 5?? That's a tall order, but here goes in no particular order -

Escudo
Wilderness
P&W #78
P&W Churchill
Stonehaven

I guess if I had a desert island list these would top it.

Cheers,

RR
