Wooden pipes = wooden matches. Torches are used at Luau's and for welding

...so, meerschaum pipe = stone-produced fire, like sparking flint into the bowl? Falcon pipes are Zippo-use only? :p

You know what, that isn't as crazy as it sounds. Although, for stone (i.e. flint) there was always tinder used as well, so a tinder lighter (compressed moss wick) would still fit perfectly. Matches for wood, zippo for Faclon/metal pipes...I love it! Actually, the tinder lighter would go with my clays as well. I really like the idea of this, shall have to experiment on the weekend.

monbla only uses the bow drill method to light anything. it was the most advanced technology when he started smoking a pipe.

LOL! HOWEVER, there is a part of you that wants to try this isn't there? I know that I do! A big part of pipeology for me is the ritual involved. This would add that extra something for those special smokes!

It takes me long enough to carefully prep the tobacco, store the tobacco, buy the tobacco, clean the pipes, rest the pipes and select the pipes...any added time by rubbin' two sticks together to get a light might just push me to making a "fire bundle" so I don't have to do it every time...this isn't classic French cooking, I shouldn't have to start today to smoke my pipe next week.

Monbla simply asked the burning bush for his first light with a pipe, he's been lost ever since. :p
