If I'm going on vacation or a camping trip or something of that nature and I want to bring a single pipe to smoke several bowls a day out of, what do you guys suggest? I'm guessing a meerschaum, but I'm a little worried that it may be sensitive to rough handling? Thanks for any suggestions in advance.

I'd recommend just getting a couple of cobs, that way if something happens to it, you haven't lost much money wise.

A couple of nosewarmer briars.....they travel well and are small. Take more than one pipe. Take the bits out while traveling to preclude breakage (Trust me, I learned the hard way!!).

^...this.

If you order now, you'll get 'em in about a week. http://www.marscigars.com/corncob.aspx

I have a Great Dane bent spool, bent Diplomat, and a straight Washington. I love 'em all. They smoke great (just take out the filters and use a half of a bent pipecleaner) Total cost for all of 'em: Less than $20. 8)

I bought a little Nording Snake pipe. It was only $10, and it doesn't need too much of a resting time.

I agree with the cobs. Good smokers and good price, can't go wrong.
(You may find yourself smoking them long after the trip).
Enjoy!

Im surprised no one has mentioned Cobs.... :lol!: :lol!:

but really, cobs are excellent pipes for any purpose.

i smoked exclusively cobs for about a year when i first started pipes, and i was never disappointed. I still smoke them frequently even though i have a few chunks of briar to my name. for the price and durability, a better smoke is not to be found.

I like the term "chucks of briar." 8) If there were a group-word for 'em, that's it.

whoops i meant to say "chunks of briar", hopefully you still agree that it is a fitting description :p i will edit.

I concur that cobs are a good option. If you are set on briar though, I always carry my Peterson System 31 when traveling. It came with me on two tours to Iraq. It spend many days in a ruck sack, and survived 130 degree days and colossal dust storms. I love that little Pete.

--Oh, military bits are a good thing to look for in a travel/beat around pipe.
