Wait, hold on... "Fancy man"?

Here we go-

So today I'm at work and I stop off at the local b&m to grab some house blend English and stuff to get me through till I get home. While I'm there I'm waiting patiently for another guy (about my age) to get his cigars and what have you rung out. The owner had to go get something for the guy in back, so I break out my pipe and light up the other half a bowl I had going.

I'm looking over the pipes on display, minding my own beeswax when the other guy asks about pipe smoking. I figure he's probably open minded about tobacco in general, so I give my standard statement about broader range of flavor and cool pipes and such. This statement of mine includes "So, you never bothered to try"?

He says to me "Uh, no. I'm not really a fancy man type". Mind you, I'm dressed like I am in my avatar and I'm 6-2 240lbs. This guy is wearing loafers and a pastel polo shirt that's about a huckleberry off persimmon. I asked him if I looked like a fancy man to him and he said no, but he always thought of pipe guys that way. (Paraphrasing here)

So, my question is to all of you reading this is: Has this ever happened to you? Also, do any of you think of pipe smoking as generally being fancy? I know it can be, but for me it's more about setting I guess.

There seems to be a generalization that pipe smokers are a thoughtful and considerate demographic, that there is more effort put into choices of devices and tobacco....

I do my best to dispel such thoughts.

Yah, there are those of the mind I think too much, and am 'fancy' about my habit...

I've never enjoyed the B&M smoking lounge vibe. It tends to be cigar-centric, and while pipe smokers are tolerated, I never have really part of the fold. It's probably just a personal thing, but I prefer to get what I need and be on my way. Just too much uncomfortable silence for me, lol.

Sometimes, cigar guys can be pretty demeaning about pipe puffers. Guess they don't see it as being manly enough, pretentious, or something. I've seen this on another board but not in person.

monbla will be along anytime to relate one of his stories about the "bubbas" that he's run into at his local B&M.

I hasten to add that this is in no way an effort on my part to demean those who enjoy cigars. I myself used to be be 100% into them for many years, and never thought any less of pipers as back then pipe smoking was an occasional thing for me as well.

My late Pap smoked a pipe as long as I can remember, and he fought and survived in WWII, as did my Uncle. They certainly weren't "fancy men".

I haven't experienced this, but I rarely smoke outside the vicinity of my property.  

I do however get a few odd glances here and there from folks going by when I am smoking on the front porch.

I am pretty sure they think that I am some "fancy-pants" professor from UC Davis down the road.

The brick and mortars in the Sacramento area are very pipe friendly. Personally I have always thought that cigar smokers were the fancy ones. Pipe smoking is a pretty humble and moderately priced activity. $25.00 bucks will buy you a lot of pipe-smokes and one could easily blow that on a single cigar. Who's fancy now?

I hate to disapoint you dude, but we don't have any pipe B&Ms here in town, just cigar stores that might carry 4 or 5 tinned 'baccys at most. Besides we pipe smokers are Fancy folks as I ALWAYS wear tweeds, corduroy, and bucks ALL year long !! Just adds to the proffessor pipe smoking image we all give folks., right ? :twisted: :twisted:

Yeh I did, but you did seem to like it and besides, that was back in the '80s. Even the one Edwards store in Dallas isn't worth going to as it's now mostly cigars. Times change !! :twisted: :twisted:

Now and then when I go into the nearby B&M there will be a few cigar buffs hanging out. If they seem frisky, I don't smile, just make brief eye contact, go through their space, and say, "Morning, boys," then go about my business. They might pick on the next guy, tho. My daughter thinks it's hilarious that many strangers -- of both genders and of all ages-- automatically call me "sir." I have no idea why I get formal politeness when much bigger guys get their legs pulled. Life's weird little mysteries . . .

:lol:   Or make an allusion to the fellatio thing some associate with large cigars. I've always found that to be well-received, at least from my point of view in similar situations.

I did take a slight tone with him when I asked if he thought I was a fancy man. The owner though it was funny, but honestly I need to be able to go back there sometimes. I can't get too mouthy around town with the work truck outside.

I'm welcome there anytime, but a couple ofthe pipe smoking customers on my routes that I've seen in there don't exactly get excited when they see their garbage man in there.

I have always gotten the same thing, and been just as confused.

I garnered a little insight when a guy I was sitting next to at the dinner counter asked me "are you just perpetually pissed off or what?" I hadn't spoken to him but I began to glance at a mirror in passing... I almost always look like I'm ready to blow a gasket..unless I'm in a state of intoxication... In that case I look like I am a kid on Christmas morning.

I've been getting the sir treatment since my temples started going gray a Few years ago. I used to say to people, "the last time someone called me sir, I was about to get arrested" lol. It's mostly teens and earlier twenty somethings at this point, but it's bound to get worse, huh?
