I don't think there's a priority in which the factors that make a pipe catch my eye happen, but it's a combination of shape, finish, color, stem material/color, bend of the stem. When a pipe catches my eye, it's one of those deals where you see it and it just sticks out like a sore thumb. The fit and finish and "hand feel" have a lot to do with it too. Unfortunately, that part is hard to do buying online. I'm a bit nerdy, so a lot of times if I see a pipe that I like, I'll save the photos on my computer. I have a folder full of pipe photos. I hope when I get the space to start making my own, I can get ideas from them for shapes, finishes, etc.
