MisterE, at least, should appreciate this one. I am presently recording it to MP3 tracks.

This double album features the program of an historic tour of the Soviet Union (under Leonid Brezhnev) by the University of Minnesota Concert band Ensemble directed by Frank Bencriscutto. Many university music departments have a concert ensemble reserved for only the best of their student musicians. This particular ensemble was the creme of the creme, having won the tour in competition among the elete university ensembles of the period. The recording quality of this album is high. The album features an early performance of "Rocky Point Holiday", composed by Ron Nelson under commission specifically for this ensemble.

I wouldn't call this a rare album, but it is hard to find outside of university library copies, which are probably all scratched up. I owned the album long ago, then lost it (WTF??), and recently found one for sale on Ebay (in Russia) in good condition for $100. Its that good.

Yes, given the time period when they did that tour it would definitely qualify as historic!! I was lucky enough to perform in St. Petersburg a few years ago, but the wall was down by that point so it wasn´t such a big deal by comparison

I am not familiar with tha album or Ron Nelson's work but I'd really love to get a clip or two from you when you get it on mp3!

I have heard some of the old recordings from the Eastman School around that time and those were impressive for "student ensembles". I cant remeber if it was Revelli, or Hunstberger, or Fennell who conducted then though. One of those guys anyway...

Were you involved in the University of Minnesota Wind Ensemble when they made this??

No. I entered the U of M in 1972 and was directed by Bencriscutto in marching band music practices and the marching annual indoor concerts, and by Asst. Directors in one of the ordinary concert bands (euphonium).
