Spent much of the day "Forging" a new giant pipe nail. Amid the torches and anvil and forging hammer playtime I smoked a 'secret' test blend that is an apprent attempt at Stonehaven...in a group 4, full bent CAO Meer, carved with Mr.Holmes on one side and Mr. Watson on the other. The testweed was stellar, and I've nearly finished the nail. Good day all around!

HINT - DERIVED FROM BIZZARE NEW TECHNIQUE: Yesterday I smoked the first bowl of the mystery blend with pretty good results. It got into the zone at the halfway point and went gold from there. Then today...As I had very little of the mystery blend left after filling the bowl for the second trial, I smoked it down halfway (to the gold zone) then tipped off the light ash, tamped lightly and added the remaining blend to the top of the bowl, exhausting my supply. Following a relight, the remainder of the smoke was absolutely stellar...providing a full bowl that was in the zone. I've never added fresh on top of a half smoked bowl before, but the result was amazing. I'll certainly try this in the future!

FVF

Old Bewlay Special (apparent meaning : nice grain & no fills) with an LL lucite optomised-airway re-stem.

Bewlays was, at one time, a large & successful chain of tobacconists in England, like Puff-&-Brouse & the Tinderbox were here. Like them, they bought the pipes they sold from various manufacturers and stamped them.

It's one of the five or so pipes here that have taken turns being MVP, for years. And a poster child example of the fact that, once an older pipe is properly cured and smoked-in, the name on it bears no relation to its performance quality.

Past a certain age (above) and use horizon, older Dunhills, Barlings, Comoys &c. are a lot more valuable than similarly old Parkers, Bewlays or Hardcastles, but they perform on a par with each other.

You can't taste the names on the shanks. 8)

The last several months I've been re-visiting all the drug store blends and usually smoke them in one of my Dr. Gs. Tonight I decided to have a bowl of Carter Hall in my Balleby bent apple. A nice surprise at the depth of flavors and smoothness.
