Gday everyone.

Im still kinda new to the pipe smoking world, but i am interested in what other types peoeple smoke, when?

Ie,
* would you pick up one or several english blends and smoke them all day/everyday?
* Or would you maybe smoke english's in the mornings/during the day, and have an Aromatic in the evning? (maybe the otherway around?)
* Maybe Aromatics in the summer time, english in the winter... for somthing warmer/heartier..
* maybe have several tins and smoke them in order, nomatter what the time..

For me, timing wise. im happly smoking english in morning/afternoon... and the Aromatic in the Evning (keeps the Mrs happy'ier!)

Granted i dont smoke everyday.. and oftern in the evning anyway, so Aromatic indoors, or if in a pub/beer garden/outdoors, English..)

Personly,.. i only realy have experianced english's ( EMP and MM 965 ) and an Aromatic i picked up in hastings (an inhouse blend, no name.... but i am going to be trying/buying a tin of peterson's connoisseurs choice next.. heard some gr8 things about it) always open for advice/recommendations too :)

What about you?

Just screw around with it long enough to get a handle on what you like and when. It's a process of discovery.

If you want a canned answer, Embarcadero in one set of pipes, & Union Square in the other. Repeat 'til Judgement Day, with noteworthy satisfaction.

I personally like to smoke English, Balkan, and Ropes like Black XX in the morning. The rest of the day I usually smoke virginias that range from ribbon cut in early-mid afternoon and heavier flakes in the mid afternoon to evenings. When it rains, snows, or is overcast I smoke English or Aromatics. Sometimes I smoke aromatics while driving.

I really couldn't tell you why I favor specific blends at different times of day, I just do.

I like to jump around a lot, and rarely swear off any particular tobaccos except for heavily cased aromatics. However, some nic heavy blends I rarely smoke away from home, in case I suddenly feel the need to go lay down for a bit.

I think this thread is actually going to produce some interesting results.

I will smoke Virginia/ VA/Per all day long. I typically only smoke latakia later in the day. I rarely smoke in the mornings because I don't usually have time, but when its possible to sit down with a cup of coffee before the rest of the house wakes up, I love OTC burley.

It is more as the spirit moves. Most of my choices are Va based. I keep a bit of Proper English around that I'll hit every so often. But PS LNF makes up the bulk.

I find that I typically smoke one bowl of a latakia blend a day when I am at home. I have a pipe that smokes nothing but latakia blends right now. This was mostly American Heritage until recently when a gracious and generous brother sent me some samples of some others to try.

You go through phases when one thing or another appeals. I smoke mostly Old Companion all year, but I have been trying some flakes since joining BoB. I have been smoking and enjoying VaPer's recently.

An advantage of having a few options in the tobacco cellar is that if you are in the mood for something, you can crack a tin. Everyone is different about this, but I find that a new tobacco does not really "smoke right" for me until I have a few bowls of it in a pipe. So - I tend to decide I am in the mood for something and dedicate a pipe or two to it until the tin is gone. I have one pipe that smokes OGS like they were made for each other, and so it is a VaPer pipe. I have a Canadian that smokes various OTC burleys well. I have four or five pipes that just see Old Companion.

I ended up with this routine not because I set out to do it, but because it works for me. I don't like to jump around too much with the pipe/ tobacco combos. Eventually I hit on one that just works and it becomes a dedicated (or semi-dedicated) pipe. Yoiu need to figure out what works for you.

I spent the first 30 years of pipe smoking consuming tins of MM965 and BS759 in every style and make of pipe I owned. The past 10 years now I've branched into more Va's and recently VaPers and less English/Balkan mixtures. I still smoke ALL my 'bacs in ALL my pipes and as far as a "seasonal" preference, I'd have to say I probably smoke my Va's more in the warmer months and the few English/Balkan mixtures more in the colder months. The one blend I find perfect year round is the Dunhill Royal Yacht mixture sometimes just it all day. As far as "dedicating" a certain pipe for just one 'bac, I've not found this really suits my smoking habits very well. Sure, some style of pipes smoke a certain style of 'bac seemingly better than some others but I don't "dedicate" any one to any one 'bac. I like rubbed out Flakes in my Pots and English/Balkans in my Bulldogs and Billiards . JMHO

I personally prefer aromatics as my go to smoke, it's what I started on and it's never failed to satisfy me(okay maybe once or twice, but that's the nature of this beast, right?). I usually smoke something similar to CBW or LL1Q but I'm now started to try the fruity flavors like verry cherry and peaches&cream.

But, I do have a few va/per and latakia blends that I really only smoke if it's cold or close to bedtime. I find that the dense, fullbodied, almost chewy nature of latakia makes me REALLY sleepy.

Of course I have my pipes split into 2/3 for aro's and 1/3 for everything else but most of my bowl's are the close to the same size as I find only one size works best for me, tall and narrow. Other kind's just burn too hot&wet for my chimney-esque smoking style. I need a fireplace with a stem attached to it.

I usually have a bowl of OGS first thing every morning. Then whatever I'm in the mood for until bedtime with OGS sprinkled in throughout the day. I'm inside in the AC 98% of the time so I really don't pay attention to the weather outside in regards to my tobacco choices.:)

The pinnacle of subjective hobbies reigns supreme again.

1,000 pipe smokers--1,000 different answers.

Oz, smoke what you like and like what you smoke. If it's stellar with repeated results--keep going. If it seemed like a good idea and turned out quite the opposite, well then--stop doing it (or change it up, put it aside for later...)

I think even subconsciously people smoke and even choose differently depending on the weather and time of year. That's my current fascination with tobacco--seasonality. O'er here, we're in the height of summer. Down there, you're probably waiting for spring to come in a few months. Geography matters, too, because if you take your favorite "cold" weather tobacco to Ontario in wintertime, when you're used to weathering relatively comfortably in an Aussie winter, they're gonna smoke differently. For that matter, you will likely smoke differently. But if I were to head to Oz-land in December, coming from Nevada, I'd probably fare pretty well with my typical "summer" tobaccos (which happen to be lighter VAs and mixtures with a pinch of cigar leaf, if you must know :D ).

With so many variables, it's best just to set sail and let the smoke drift ya where both of you agree. You'll start noticing patterns, good or bad, to either replicate or change.

It's dead in the middle of summer and I've been diggin' on C&D's Bow-Legged Bear lately. It's a Lat blend, which most seem to like during the winter months. I'm all discombobulated. :lol!:

I've got some 12 blends open featuring HOs, Dark Flake, 1792 and Old Dark-Fired; but also Cumberland, Escudo/D. Deluxe N. Rolls, Oriental Dusk, and Nightcap; betimes Black Irish XXX, when I want something completely unsophisticated. I don't really smoke anything else, and what I smoke doesn't vary with the season. When one of the HOs is gone, I refill the jar. But when one of the alternates ends, I open something else, and right now I'm concentrating on Pease's dark Virginias, i.e. Cumberland, Navigator and Jacknife Plug.

Let me see, seeing I only smoke Escudo and on few occasions Wessex BS........I'd say Escudo in the summer thru Fall and Escudo in the winter thru Spring and Wessex BS on what's left.

Being mostly a VA/VaPer guy I don't vary from this too much. Too many to list.

That said I've been enjoying Peretti's Somerset Slices recently.

Cheers,

RR

I'm no help here!! I light up whatever moves me at the moment! I rotate thru a selection of LatWeeds, GinnyWeeds (straight or VaPer), and Burleys thru the day. The only "aro's" I hit are Bob's and The Mayor's Chocolate Flakes plus an occasional hit of my remaining Troost Slices. The aro's are only hit in the evening.

You'll figure out your tobacco "rotation" as you work your way through this wonderful hobby of ours!! FTRPLT

Time of day plays no part for me (well some of the oriental forward light lat blends in the morning maybe), but I do smoke seasonally.

I don't smoke exclusively seasonable however, and I might get into the mood for anything at any time, but there are a few blends that, when summer, autumn, or winter rolls around I get into the mood for. Oddly, spring not so much. That season just doesn't have a "feel" to me like the other seasons do. I suppose that's a bit odd.

Anyway...

Autumn:
-4noggins Essence of Vermont
-Samuel Gawith Chocolate Flake

Winter:
-Ashton Artisan Blend
-GL Pease Odyssey

Summer:
-G&H Rum Flake
-John Patton Storm Front

This is where I am with GLP Robusto.  All of my logic says "Smoke This In Fall."   But that cigar leaf is nailing it. Don't tell anyone, but I even sneak some Billy Bud in. *gasp* I'm a rebel against my inner gestapo. Makes sense.

Which is why I bow humbly to Storm Crow, but am keeping an eye on my stash of Storm Front.  That one's been a good evening friend for me.    I need to get more.  Along with Oriental Dusk, which takes up my mornings.   Union Square for moments of much needed simplicity.

Happy as a clam.  At least with my tobacco.
