Well I have decided on getting a bespoke Northern briars pipe. It will be a group 5 bent rhodesian (bulldog) in bruyere premiere. I need to decide on a stem color. There is the usual black and of course the usual cumberland. He has also used colored cumberland. I am contemplating a green cumberland. What say you?

A classic pipe needs a classic bit. Regular Cumberland for me !!

I don't man. I was all set to come here an condemn you for even considering a colored stem. But, now that I have seen it, I don't know... That green stem looks pretty slick. Hm... I will abstain from voting at this time.

Nooooo!!

Not green or blue, just ordinary cumberland like in the bottom picture.

Green or blue go nicely with naked briar but normal (brown) cumberland matches the colour of your pipe 100%

I didn't really care for the green until I made Jesse's Morta Rhodesian last winter....it had a green cumberland stem. It is an easy material to work with from a maker's standpoint. I don't think it looks right in every application, as Pete said. But, on that Morta pipe it was awesome.

I have never used the blue, but have seen it on a few of Walt Cannoy's Meerschaums and it looks great.

I really like the green with that pipe. I think it will look really good. You should go with whatever color you really like and WANT. I tend to like changing things up a bit. Makes the pipe special. I like the cumberland stems too.

I have a Charl Goussard naked briar bulldog (Picture at MAY I SEE YOU BENT BULLDOGS) with a blue stem and I love it.

I think the natural cumberland goes great with that pipe. It has a good flow to it. The green reminds me of green stained paneling from the past.

I voted blue. It's a matter of how bold you want to be. I believe if the blue cumberland is understated enough it could look amazing, but of course you can't go wrong w traditional cumberland.

Normally I'd go for the traditional Cumberland color with this style. Yet have to admit the green has a lot of merit.

Not sure that I'd go for that combination for myself, but it does look rather nice in the pic. There again, green is my favorite color!

:sunny:

Cheers,

RR

I think I am leaning towards green. I am sure he can 're do the stem if I don't like it.

I'm sure he can but you should not expect him to do two stems for the price of one if you change your mind.

Having to hand cut another stem because the customer didn't like the color they picked out.
I know that's what I would want to hear from a customer, specially when they were given
plenty time to make a choice to which color they wanted. :fpalm:

:lol!: :flower: :lol!:

Another thing you could do is have him make TWO stems for you, one Green and the other in your second fave color so that when you drop it and break the tennon in the green one you can just "plug in" the spare !! ( we ALL have dropped a pipe and broken a tennon, it happens if you smoke long enough  )
