What do you look for in a pipe?

I say Dutch old bean, you're making me blush. I've just read my post again filtered through your comments and have had a right old chortle. :lol!: :fpalm:

The first thing I look for is shape. A pipe has to catch my eye and make me want to hold it. Then, I look for interesting grain or (more so lately) nice sandblast. Third, condition . . . I don't mind if a pipe is a little used, but abused is not for me. Fourth, I try to limit myself to just a few brands so I don't end up owning 1,500 pipes!

the look of the pipe is the first attraction for me. then the brand (i.e. pipes i know to be well made). the engineering and craftsmanship would come next. then, would be price. bill

For me, it's usually a nice design that draws me in, nice finish, etc.

Then, unfortunately, I have to see if I can afford it.

If I can, the next thing I'm looking for is a nice open airway with nothing out of the ordinary obstructing the flow.

Unfortunately, I can't assess that over the internet, so instead, I'll look at the maker.

Does he have a reputation for making nice smoking pipes.

If so, I can probably expect that the pipe I'll be buying will be a nice smoker, as well.
