Maybe it's not true but I always get the feeling that a pipe was rusticated to hide a blemish. I do not own any such pipes.
 
I just love the smooth finish, straight grain pipes. I also enjoy a good Birdseye in lighter tone. I dont like at all rustication or any type of rough/blasted surface on my pipes. Nothing wrong with them, just personal preference.
 
Let's face it guys, some of these rough finished pipes are really sharp, & very appealing.That's why they sell so well. And some will provide a supperior smoke.
but on the other hand, I can't imagine that any pipe maker would destroy a prime grain briar to rusticate it. In purchaseing pipes, we can never predict how any briar will smoke, I trust my instincs. Based on my years and pipe experience, some would consider me " Old Skool" But if it apeals to me,I go for it. I LOVE PIPES.
