Looks like it's in the Birch family to me. I once made a pipe from a piece of aged Birch and it lasted for years. I have since gifted it and it's still in use.

KEEP ON PUFFING!!!

Wow! I kind of hit the jackpot and I got a crap ton of it. Black walnut, too.

I didn't put my nose that close to the fast, sharp chain, so I didn't really smell it...

I was going to do some pipes out of it. Possibly some bowls, cups, etc.... lathes are the best!

That's a much larger tree. Cherry is my best guess. 19 years as an ISA Certified Arborist. I'd be very surprised is I was wrong.

Any Brother or Sister is encouraged to use me as a resource for tree or medical related questions. Southeastern trees (tropicals the exception) I am good at identifying, since I am from that region.

All the best,
Matt

From the Bark it apears that it is probably White Birch. My Grandparents had a forest of these trees on their property up in New Hampshire and I became familiar with these trees and their unique bark.

Could be a flowering Cherry or Plum variety. The bark sure looks different from the Black Cherry in the photo- but looks exactly like a big Flowering Plum I have. Leaves look right too.

What say ye Mr. Arborist?
