What's Better Than A New Pipe?

I love both pipes, unfortunately after looking both over time and time again as I usually do, I've found a small chip along the mouthpiece on the Peterson. Actually, I wouldn't call it a chip, more so an indentation created during the machining process. Either way, the pipe is so perfect in every other aspect that this stands out like a sore thumb, luckily they have another that I'm going to exchange for on Monday. Picky? Perfectionist? High expectations? Call it what you will, it pains me to see it go, but I'm sure some can relate, it's all I can see! Unless someone can convince me I'm being silly.

It is an acrylic bit and it WILL get teeth marks as they are somewhat softer than the vulcanite ones. What are you going to do then? It's part of smoking a pipe!! If having everything PERFECT is a requirement for you, that's what you need. But in the real world, pipes get dings and bits get imperfect :p

I completely agree. I know my pipes WILL get dinged up, that I have no problem with, I suppose the issue lies in that my NEW pipe is already dinged up, . I'd like to be the one to cause these imperfections through time and tales. Like I say, it seems to be a slip of the lathe or something right along the lip, certainly not due to poor handling or anything. I guess a question to ask seeing as I'm new to this stuff is what do you folks tend to see in new pipes as far as imperfections go? Excluding fills, I'm not sure what's normal or abnormal. I'd take a picture and show you but with the colour of the stem and size of the imperfection it's tough. Perhaps I need to abandon my obsessive attitude towards pipes?

Lol I think this oops is because of the misinformation in his response about acrylic and vulcanite.....if it isn't.....its the other way around rusty....Acrylic is harder and less likely to get tooth marks than vulcanite.

This.

Chompers rejoice.

Which is why I'm not picky on my stem material, I don't clench or chomp much, except for cobs. Go figure.

Rusty, I personally find it silly you'd find the thing on a pipe that made it 99% perfect rather than 100% and want to give it back, but that's just me. You never know, dude, the pipe you give back may be the best smoker in the world, and the one that looks pristine may give you problems. As a point of note, you're planning on collecting AND smoking, and these two frames of thinking have to come to terms with one another eventually.

Do as you will, though. 8)

Damn! Every opinion gives me something to think about. I think if I'm going to continue this hobby, I need to revamp my way of thinking.

I was questioning that one myself, just goes to show how gullible I am though.

I don't think its too sill of you to send it back. I've done so myself with a Stanwell, on the shank there was a tiny hole, it looked almost like a termite had its way with it. The draw was unhindered and no one else saw it but me. But in the end this hobby of ours is all about number one, pleasing yourself. If you're unhappy with it no matter what it is, it's best to follow your guy, I say. That said, I still do understand and accept the fact that over time our beloved pipes will change as they are first and foremost a tool, and then art after that. But, like I said it's your decision and your pipe, either way I hope you are happy whichever way you decide to go.

Then again, that stem sure is smokey, swirly, pretty... probably won't find another like that anywhere!
Haha, don't make this more difficult than it already is!

Why go thru all the hassle of packing it up, mailing it off and going thru the wait for a replacement when the spot where the "imperfection" is will be covered by your lips when it is in your mouth being smoked ? Your chances of getting some other "imperfection" is 50/50 with the next one unless you are willing to step up to around 4-500 dollars range in today's pipe world. Considering where the "imperfection" is, you are being waaaaay to picky IMHO :p Load that puppy up and smoke it!! :p

Point taken. I guess I just don't believe brand new pipes should sport these kind of defects.

Just imagine, there's gonna be some pretty stressed m'fer's when the briar gets even worse 10 years from now. 8)

I see crappier briar at a higher price. How can they live with themselves!?

Very nice, sir. I like those shapes, hope they smoke as good as they look.
