I found one topic where fellow puffers revealed how miserable the weather could be before they were driven from the great outdoors.

So my question is, has anyone found a congenial place to smoke your pipe which is not one of the following:

1. not in your home or apartment
2. not outdoors
3. not at a local tobacco shop

Any suggestions would be appriciated.

Doesn't exist in Ontario either.....

The laws here prohibit smoking in any indoor "workplace", defined as any place where anyone works - bars, restaurants, private clubs, legion halls etc are therefore all workplaces and therefore smoke-free.

Private homes and other private property where no one works is it for indoor smoking here. Outdoors is fine as long as you're more than 50m from a playground or school.

If I had critical mass of pipe smokers locally, I'd suggest we buy/rent a detached building somewhere and all volunteer our time pouring drinks, etc. :D

Well, I guess, barring the rental of a private space, we're just S.O.L.
Many folks dedicate a certain man-space at home if you can't or won't smoke in the house due to SWMBO. Like the garage with a space heater and a few comfortable all-purpose chairs, and maybe a beer fridge and wi-fi. Or even an outbuilding/shed designated for this purpose. A man cave. For manly men. Shouldn't be hard to get to something you can do in lieu of a commercial gathering place.

Cheers,

RR

Rental space would be sweet except it would be difficult to manage.
No kidding. Starting with finding a group of people you actually like enough to get that involved with!

But yes, the logistics would be untenable and the government here would likely find a way to declare it illegal anyway.

Your vehicle, and mine.
This is the best choice for pipers banished from home and hearth. It offers stereo, hvac and, often, heated seats, plus it can be moved to congenial locations. As a chronic piper I've developed the habit of constantly scouting for likely smoking spots. There's a HS baseball field near me where a parking lot offers a good view of the game. The soccer field parking lot is also good, but is used by solipsistic parents of tykes and is directly across the street from the police station. A ten-minute drive puts me at a picturesque fly-fishing-only stretch of river. A little longer drive brings me to a spot overlooking a waterfall and popular kayaking launch, plus there's a friendly grinder shop on the way. I've always wanted my own backyard outbuilding, like Thoreau on Walden Pond, but the missus thinks it would bring out my reclusive inclinations. Actually, I now kinda prefer outdoor smoking, weather permitting.

I live in California. So the answer to your question is No, No, No and just to be safe, No.

Looks like I'll follow KevinM's advice and scout out some pleasant spots around town where I'll just smoke in the car.

As a child in the 1950's, I can remember going to the big downtown department store where customers smoked in the store and even put out their cigarettes on the unfinished hardwood floors.

So long ago and far away.

My local VFW. It's a "membership only" establishment (not open to the public) and smoking is allowed in the bar section. Several smoke eater ventilation systems were installed in the ceiling when it was built a few years ago and it provides a relatively smoke free environment.

I've gone the insulated garage & shop heater route myself. Needs a few more creature comforts but the DW digs her heels in if I move to fast. Baby steps! ;)

Good on ya! :D

Typing "DW" is also a lot faster than "SWMBO" (She Who Must Be Obeyed). Amounts to much the same thing though.
