Greg, was thinking of you the other day, GDB's and all, got my hands on a lightly smoked (60's I think) GBD Valios billiard.
Damn it's a fine smoker, I have been missing much!
And, so begins the fall. ;)

Glad you got one you like, Piet. I think everyone should have at least one GBD in their collection!

Greg, after seeing and hearing about your take on these a couple of yrs back, Muddler took the fall!!!!
I really like the older French made pipes, they are just Fantastic in all respects!

Say Gerg, while I have your attention, I have an GBD Esterel Blasted billiard as well. It is really a good smoker. I am having difficulty dating the pipe. Do you have any idea, dumb question, of course you do. I suspect it is English made, 80's maybe??
Either way I am now hooked, Old GBD's here we come!!

I personally would have a very hard time spending $700 on a pipe. Just not within my financial reach. Although they are all works of art and I'd love to have one ;)

I would say get two in the $300-$400 range. Still very beautiful work.

The 2010 Tinsky christmas pipe is very attractive. I would have a hard time picking between finishes, I love the mocha, natural, pristine and sunrise

I had a 2000 Tinsky christmas pipe and sold it when I gave up pipe smoking for a while. Now that I'm back, I wish I never parted with it. I also had a Tinsky custom.

Where is the icon showing me kicking myself in the ass?

Anyway, good luck on your search. Its great seeing guys like Greg Pease providing their viewpoint. It's like getting football tips from a pro!!

I don't know the Esterel grade at all, so I can't be of any assistance, there. GBD made SO many grades, many of which were destined for specific markets. There was a guy from Brazil, if I recall correctly, selling a bunch of new old stock from a shuttered shop, and I didn't recognize most of the lines he had. A bunch of pipes from the 60s or 70s with names I'd never seen.

It's fascinating to think about today's pipe culture in comparison to that of a century, or even just a few decades past. Closer to the beginning of the 20th century, and well into the 1940s, factories turned out millions of pipes per year, as compared with today's thousands. The pipe was then not a novelty, but almost a requisite.

Yet, we continue, and boldly so! Even though we are fewer in numbers, our culture has survived and even flourished. I wonder if there were many enthusiasts in those years, or just pipe smokers. I wonder if the cottage industry of artist pipe makers could have made much of an impact, then. Or small batch tobacco blenders.

We are fortunate to be pipe smokers in this day, I think!

I have been thinking much like that, pick 2 and have a couple very nice pipes and only 2 to break in too, LOL!

I am having a problem now after looking at the brands listed that I really want one of each of the better one and I also find several in each that just say wow what a great looking pipe. Different also makes a difference to me sometime.

Just spoke with the guys from The Briary and had a nice talk and good info to help me decide. Nice guys there!

Sorry Skip but these you've listed are all sadly out of my league. Sasquatch is making me a pipe that will be my most expensive to date and it is very reasonable for a custom made pipe of great quality ($165),can't wait!!

truth is my go-to pipe nowadays besides my coveted Piet Binsbergen is a $23 Baraccini. (Piet, it's Italian!!) It smokes like a dream, better than most of my $75-$100 pipes. But then I'm on a limited budget so have never experienced the pleasure of elite pipes. If you have the money to spend then it looks like you have lots of recomendations from the BoBers. Hope you find a good'n. I envy you!

Well I can get carried away pretty easy when talking about something I really like and since I have not bought a pipe since 1980, my OCD is making me want some. I have one coming from Sas now which I can't wait, but probable not hear until Monday or Tuesday.

Then I am having to take control of self here and now just want to add 2 really nice pipes and since many of the better one today were no available or not known by me when I quit back in 1980. I was looking and thinking some how I "need" one of each of the better ones to at least have one from them all, but not possible now to do them all. So will get this down to 2 other than the one from Sas and don't know if it will be unsmoked or previous smoked.

I should have included this part in my questions about rank. I have never bought a pipe that had been smoked before and would love to hear what everyone thinks about buying previous smoked pipes. I feel pretty sure I can save some bucks, but I don't have a way to value them against never smoked pipes and what kind of savings I can expect if any.

Skip48......Just my opinion but don't be afraid to purchase a presmoked pipe. Since I picked up my pipes again, a little over 5 years ago, I've bought many estate pipes and quite a few of them are now among my favorites. I have 9 Castellos and only 2 were bought new - all of my Castello's are great smokers. About half of the 9 Cavicchi's in my rotation were estate pipes. All but one of the 6 Wiley's I have were estates. My other pipes are a mix of estate and new purchases. Smokingpipes.com and Grey fox are both good sites for estate buys, you can save $$'s if careful on ebay (see my post "My latest PAD" on BOB TAD & PAD. I'm smoking the estate Cavicchi as I write and it's good. I'm retired, budget is and issue and I'm looking to purchase 2 or 3 more Castello's or Cavicchi's with $'s from some pipes I just sold. I'm looking at estates mostly (especially for Castello's) because there is more bang for the bucks in the estate market. Good luck with your quest...............Regards: Bob H

Thanks as I have been wondering about them a lot. I am forced retired since 1989 with bad back, then in 2000 had 5 Bypasses. Have made some money on my own trading stock before my little heart thing, but after that something in my mind changed and made me quit trading stocks. Live in a nice place, got lucky from an Uncle in his family trust and now have some royalties and mineral rights that help. So money of the amounts we are talking about are not so tough, but I spend a ton on fly/jig thing materials and mostly pay for it with sales. It may be different if I was depending on my SSI or just the wife's pay, but I am not thankfully.

I am not about to run out and buy a bunch of pipes as I really have enough now, but have the want thing so will get a couple probably.

Thanks for the help and links!
