I've used one for over 25 years. Relatively windproof, works best with a moderately short wick. Evaporates no faster than a standard Zippo reservoir. Many will mention the taste that fluid lighters impart to pipe tobacco but as far as the reliability and effectiveness of Zippo pipe inserts go, every bit as reliable as Zippo in general. I work outdoors and it has always been my go-to for work with matches as my back-up.

Durr... just realized you're talking about the butane insert. Sorry, no idea at all but I'll leave the post up for a laugh.🤪

I use the Z-Plus Pipe inserts. They work well and are easy to fill. The Piezo spark is usually the part that fails after many lights. I tried the Zippo spark wheel pip insert and wasn't a fan. It's not as comfortable to light as the Z-Plus.

I have one of the old wheel and flint butane models in my daily carry Zippo. I don't think I've used in at least a month or two; just tried it and it lit like a champ! That would never happen with my "fluid" insets.

I have one. It's not my first choice. I usually start with a kitchen match. Then relight with a Zippo using the pipe lighter insert. Trick to the fluid is, light it and let it burn for a second or two and that reduces any taste or smell. Use Zippo fuel for best results.

The butane insert does not last long as I feel it should. The flame seems softer. Heavy feel. But it works alright. I only have one. The standard pipe inserts, I must have a half-dozen or so.

I’ve been using one for about a year and I’ve been happy with it. Nice to not have to refill as often as lighter fluid and the flame is a little softer and smaller, so it’s a bit easier to direct.

I would generally say I’m in favor and supportive of it. I’d get another if mine broke or got lost.

I think that’s pretty much the thing…would you buy another.

I’d also check out the new version of the Ronson Comet. It’s cheap and pretty much bulletproof. Buy 2 or 3 on the “big A” for $8 delivered. Obviously they don’t have the extensive history and nostalgia that the Zippo does. Whatever…
