    whats the difference

These are the major differentiating factors I have noticed as well, and I would add that I've found that some pipes I've owned smoke cooler than others. By that I mean how warm the pipe gets on the outside. If you have 13 pipes and do not notice a difference with respect to these, and you...

    Fanfare Ciocarlia-Balkan/Gypsy

. Here are a few Bulgarian-inspired recordings that entered my collection in the 80's. 1. Don Ellis band "Bulgarian Bulge" is typical of Ellis' experimentation with odd time signatures. He produced a string of Balkan inspired numbers during Milcho Leviev's time in his band, and Leviev (a...

    Pipe Restoration, any recommendations?

For the work you want done, Jon's Pipe Shop in Champaign IL will do well and probably give fast turn around. I've never had service through the mail though, because I live close by. Steve

Mysterious "J R" "Hand Made" pipes. Ever heard of these?

Jon Rinaldi pipes made in 2009 had JR etched within a circle on the stem, and on the shank they were marked "J. Rinaldi" in script, and "U.S.A. 2009". Recently he has changed to three inlaid metal dots inside a metal circle in the stem. I do not know what his system was before 2009. Steve

    Dunhill Bulldog

Amazing grain, blast and stain has turned this ordinary shape into a stunner. Great photos too! Steve

I would rather see it from the ground but this will do

Burt Rutan and his X-Prize collaborators stand on the shoulders of the NASA X-plane research and space shuttle programs, and have added their own innovations that make their effort just as amazing as the government programs, IMO. I recently viewed this DVD set describing their innovations and...

Feast your eyes on this X-grain

I am not bidding. Owned one Oohm Paul, smoked it a few times and then traded it. Steve

    CORPS lunacy

Love the Ligne Bretagne octagon. Many of Trevor's pipes in that line are on the smallish side, but this one seems more normal sized. Steve

Feast your eyes on this X-grain

    Check out these new pipes!

Cool post. I don't believe I've seen that ribbed pattern on an actual briar horn. Might look kind of nice. steve

    The tobacco killer...Wall of shame.

Any pipe shop that has a good estate collection may offer enough trade value to make that option worthwhile, especially if you have 2-3 other pipes that you're not on friendly terms with. Your stinkers may add up to the price of something you really like from the same shop. Steve

    What grain do you prefer?

I'm the same way - variable. The grain of a smooth or sandblast has to capture my attention, that's all. Steve

    Pipe Rack Design,

On second thought...as NeroWolfe suggested, this should only take a drill press and some blocks to guide the work. I invented a more complex solution! Like I said, I'm no wood worker. Steve

    Pipe Rack Design,

. I'm no wood worker, but I some how I got captured by this problem. The scoops in my favorite pipe rack are 1-1/2 x 1-7/8 inches, spaced 2" apart center to center, and look like they were made with a 1-1/2" round nose router bit. Imagine a jig box and router base plate like the ones shown...

Outstanding Ebay capture (not by me)

. For those of you who may be building your collection by buying estates, here is an example of an outstanding Wally Frank capture. I expected this pipe to go higher in price than it did, but then, Wally Frank pipes don't attract everyone's attention. While some Ebay Wally Franks are outright...

    Willmer Pipe Question???

    Stem finishing question

From examining pipes in my collection that have transparent stems, I have noticed differences in the finishing of the lumen of the stem bore. Some lumens are completely smooth and transparent, polished to the same finish as the outer surface of the stem. Others are smooth but not polished to...

    Willmer Pipe Question???

. I have two Willmer pipes marked as you describe, but instead of "hand made" they are stamped "hand carved". Evidently they're out there, just not as common as the smooths with the letter grading. Would like to see a photo of yours. Steve

    Great Photos thread

I remember that, and the sounds - cicadas - which loved elm trees. Steve
