    The Price of Artisan Pipes

That ramble actually ties into this conversation as well: http://www.pipemakersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=6293&start=0
  2. Sasquatch

    The Price of Artisan Pipes

As a guy who has added absolutely nothing original to the world of pipe making, I tend to agree with Yak on this one.

    The Price of Artisan Pipes

Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory.

    The Price of Artisan Pipes

This explains why all the solos I play on my actual Gibson brand Les Paul sound like Tony Iommi having a stroke.

Ebay question for you fine folks

This. Dinopuffin, Enrimore, Pierro9643 (or whatever the hell his number is).... these guys ship you a pipe. BruyerePipes out of Germany is the same. You get it fast, proper. Almost the only guys I buy from.

    The Price of Artisan Pipes

This topic is very interesting to me, and I've very intentionally kept my nose out of it. For those who don't know me well enough to understand where I'm coming from here, I'll just quickly address that: I started making pipes about 5 years ago. Started out making ugly pipes, as we all do...

    Dealing with Handmade Pipe indecision...

I look at pipes as costing between 20 and 30 cents a bowl over their lifetime, so I always buy the pipe I will enjoy most. What's so great about the eBay pipe, ie, why is it so much more? If the guy is just flipping it at a profit I would avoid it just on principle, but that's just me.

Vauen pipe, same shape different price, what gives?

There was a time, although I don't know about it anymore, but there was a time that the hand made one-off Vauens got a white dot in Germany (lost a suit from Dunhill for export). But this seems not to be the case. I think here it looks like the extra money goes into a better piece of wood...

    Pipe Woods-Rosewood or Maple

You're welcome. I think it IS revealing, and important. The guys who use rosewood, cocobolo, blackwood, etc for pipes do so at their own, and in my opinion, at others' risk. They don't feel this way, and I've had some pretty ugly conversations with a couple pipe makers who think I'm full...

    Pipe Woods-Rosewood or Maple

I'm a woodworker by trade. There are a lots of woods out there that anyone who has experienced working with them for a day knows that they leave your sinuses irritated, and in many cases, are allergic sensitizers which eventually trigger allergic or even anaphylactic reactions. This occurs...

    Briar Coloration

You know... I've only ever seen a couple of these pipes "live" and bought one, and if you look for brand representation... there just isn't any. Someone is buying these pipes in enough quantity that production was never "aimed" at the USA is my guess. How many vendors can you think of that...

    Question Regarding a Savinelli Handwarmer

What shape is it? Non Pareils are good pipes in my experience, so I think an answer of "crap pipe" is out of the question. There are other factors - if the draw is tight you might be pulling on the pipe harder than you realize, for example. I generally let the pipe tell me what I'm doing...

    Briar Coloration

What you don't see in that photo is that the walls of the pipe are really thin - the chamber is about an inch across. For a "small" pipe, it holds about a week's worth of tobacco. Ceppo is a neat company - started by Georgio Imperatori a long time ago, like in the 70s I think, and it's...

I got an Il Ceppo about 20 years ago, same color. It's dark red now just about.

    A Smooth Radice Underwood?

I've got an Underwood marked "Bark" so what the hell.

    Bent-pipe Gurgle

Technique is critical - a good pipe can't make up for a bad smoker. But, even the best smoker won't have success with a bad pipe. Add a good, practiced smoker to a good quality pipe, and bingo - no mess.
  17. Sasquatch

    Bent-pipe Gurgle

Because of how a bent pipe goes together, if it isn't done with some care, the result can be a pipe that is prone to gurgling for sure. This more often occurs as moisture gathers at the tip of the tenon. A well built pipe just won't have that issue, and there's no reason that a good bent...

    Rick Newcombe's Drilling Specs

It's almost like the stem has something to do with how a pipe smokes. Keep at this boys. We'll crack it yet.

    Rick Newcombe's Drilling Specs

As I said before, the actual diameter of drilling is probably less important than the other construction details of any particular pipe. And as noted by riff, a pipe that someone might love for being wide open, another guy might find difficult to maximize his pleasure with. C'est la vie...

    Rick Newcombe's Drilling Specs

I stop drilling with the tapered bit (from the tenon-side) about an inch from the button end, then drill a 1/16" hole through to the end. This hole is widened to become the slot, and the slot ends up being about the first inch and a half of the stem - worked right back into and through the...
