    Brigham Vs Careys

Throw Savinelli into the mix too - their balsa insert is the brigham system inside out - the Brigham being a tube of wood, the Sav being a little triangle that sits in the airway. None of them will reduce bite a heck of a lot. The Brigham won a filtered pipe shootout of sorts in P+T magazine...

Pipe shapes, pray tell. . .

https://dutchpipesmoker.wordpress.com/2013/02/11/the-prince-of-pipes/ and Pease does a nice job of highlighting the differences... http://www.glpease.com/Pipes/Shapes/Apples.php

Pipe shapes, pray tell. . .

Princes traditionally have a straight shank and a long stem. Authors traditionally have just a little bend and are usually a much chubbier presentation. The bowl shape is certainly in the same area, ranging from almost dead round (kaywoodie 13b for example) to appley to almost a brandy on...

Would you pay retail for a pipe not exact to what you want?

Is that Upshall new or estate... just seeing some spider-webbing in that chamber on the user-side? Buying a pipe to have it because it's English, or red, or 8" long, or whatever your collection is seems fine to me as far as that goes, but if you essentially don't like the pipe, dropping cash...

    Penzance at Peretti's

Tashkent is ridiculous.... I don't mind Penzance etc but I agree that Peretti have their own star attractions... some of the best tobaccos I've ever had. D-9575 is amazing too, light in lat, but what a superb mix.

    Is upshall going out?

    Well put.

    BLOATED POP TOP TINS

    BLOATED POP TOP TINS

There have been a number of bad batches of Pease product and other C/D related blends, as mentioned in the above links. When you open the tins, inspect for mold. A little pressure is pretty normal, but a real bulge on the tin could be indicating a problem. Given the track record with the...

Talk to me about McC lat blends.

Glad to hear it.... I'm trying to spend a little more time in a few online communities I've been ignoring for awhile, this one included. I had a couple of slower years for pipes, real life being very busy, but I'm trying to keep at it a bit more these days, and I like some of these forums a...

Talk to me about McC lat blends.

British Woods is as Englishy as any of them, but the real latakia standouts to me are Legends and Wilderness, both Fred Hanna blends I think. Superb. On a different flavor tangent, their "Jubilee" is also awesome. Not a lat bomb, hell I don't even know if it has latakia... I think it must...

Are Peterson pipes still made in Ireland?

Well, it's pipes, so you never know, but you are right - provenance would be the term I was after. I will edit and hang head in shame.

Are Peterson pipes still made in Ireland?

Well, what we're talking about broadly is how much it matters if a brand of pipe is farming out their manufacturing process.   Face it, Peterson made pipes out of Ireland.   Briar is Mediterranean.   So it's an import.   At this stage, Peterson and Dunhill are both pretty candid about having...

Are Peterson pipes still made in Ireland?

It's way more likely that the Dunhill smokes better because it has a really well cut stem (I am talking internal dynamics). That smooth perfect draw on an empty Dunhill tells a big story. I've talked to lots of big-time pipe makers who have said "The pipe is the stem, plain and simple." I...

Yup, a Manx Meer made for Peterson.

Okay, what's wrong with this pipe?

LOL yeah I have been none too active on this or many other boards. Real life getting in the way of talking about smoking pipes you know? :x

Okay, what's wrong with this pipe?

Understand that faking a used 80 dollar pipe is not really profitable. Ascorti and Caminetto have both used that darkened top on a million pipes, not sure why, I never liked it much myself. But it's not rare at all. So that looks perfectly legit and perfectly sound to me.

    Teipen Pipes Ryukin

I like Wayne's work because it looks like Wayne's. He's gone through the "does this look right" phase that we all struggle through, and he came out the other side without having lost his basic vision and aesthetic, which is kind of unusual these days imho. Great pipe.

Castello - Varians in drilling, but mostly awesome

From what I understand, Castello has changed their geometry a few time and those older diamond-dot units are much more restricted than the newer models. I have a couple of recent-production Castellos and they smoke just perfect for me with basically anything, so I'm a fan of what they are...

    Kaywoodie Drinkless System, RIP?

It means I might buy kaywoodies again. Goodbye and good riddance imho.

    Ashton experts please help.

Well... okay. You already knew. It's just that, every picture I can find of an Ashton marked as "Brindle" has a cumberland or similar stem. As per: http://www.pipes.org/BURST/FORMATTED/187.025.html "The Pebble Grain is a sandblasted finish that is usually stained black with deep...
