    Pull the trigger?

I would only jump at this chance it it was from someone a bit more reliable, like an inheritance from an attorney representing assets in Kuala Lumpur, or, that bastion of integrity, Nigeria.

How does your better half react to different roomnotes?

My longsuffering wife, SheWhoSpeaksLoudly or SWSL, of 32 years, grew up in a family where her father literally chain-smoked cigars. Other than 5Bros or any of the domestic twists, she has no objections to any "vile" mixture that I may smoke.

    Carter or the Prince?

I just don't care much for CH. It does have a great room note and burns cleanly, but, for me, "there's no there, there". With PA, the room note is clearly burley, the taste is burley, and I never seem to tire of smoking it. And, I've smoked PA since 1966.

Based on what is currently available, and disregarding the order: C&D OJK C&D Competition Blend (which smokes and tastes much like ERRd) C&D Barrister 5Bros Walnut

    What are you smoking?

C&D Delta Queen in a KW handmade (ca. 1945).

    A Good Codger Burley

Great idea! Uhle's markets some of the best burleys available today. I like their Perfection Plug and 5Bros mixed 1:1 by weight. The 5Bros always provides a base for a better burn. I smoked ERRd and 5Bros 1:1 by weight when ERRd was readily accessible but those days are gone, sadly.

What's Your Favorite Pipe Season ?

From about labor Day through Thanksgiving, porch sitting and smoking are great hobbies, done best alone or w/ dog. Burlieys smoke best this time of year. Winter has its moments, but the Demon Peke doesn't tolerate the cold as well as his predecessor. The Demon Peke is indispensable for...

Any books that you have read, or recommend!!!

For pipesmokers, always Georges Herment's "The Pipe". Dated references, but the smoking advice came from a life-long smoker who had an honest passion for pipes and tobacco. And, it's humorous. And, Christopher Morley's "Shandygaff", writings from another lifelong pipesmoker and people...

    Breaking In The Cob

Rule of thumb: 5Bros to break in every pipe. 5Bros smokes cool and clean to the bottom of the bowl, usually to a fine white/gray ash, while charring the sides of the bowl evenly. Very little aftertaste to contaminate future smokes. Walnut is always tasty after 4-6 bowls of 5Bros, though.

    Pinkerton's Five Brothers Smoking Tobacco!

Alive, barely, and, hopely, if I may retire, to be born again. Thanks for asking. I trust that you are also well. I've missed the mature banter and insights of this august group. Reminds me a bit of a tavern at the end of a pier in an old maritime community, sort of a crossroads for the...

    Pinkerton's Five Brothers Smoking Tobacco!

    1. The 5Bros, formerly of American Tobacco via the Finzer bros manufacturers, sold in a paper cylinder, guarenteed to dry up although there are those who like the tobacco dry. 2. I will smoke it straight in a cob, then Ropp cherrywood, then meer for that kicked-in-the-jaw nicotine fix. 3...

    peter cushing

Ironic that I should notice this thread. The 1959 "Hound" with Cushing and a very good Lee as Henry Baskerville was recently shown on cable. Strong performance by both, and a bit less frenetic than the 1939 'Hound" (which is my all time favorite, but still frenetic). To me, Cushing always did...

    Five Brothers

No question from me. 5Bros is as good a smoke as there is, anywhere. ANd, the truly sad comment is that 5Bros is the last extant representative of the string cut tobaccos which are sold as OTCs. While both Kendall KY and the dark shag are available, these are not available in the corner...

    Five Brothers Taste

5Bros has the very distinct aroma and taste of fire-cured burley, a slight cigar tone much like a good Connecticut wrapper. While I prefer to mix it with what little ERRd I have on hand, generally 1:1 by weight not volume, I find it best smoked straight in either a cob or in a clay. I have...

    The Oldest

"...A couple of years ago I found an old sealed puffed up tub of Sir Walter Raleigh that was made of metal rather than the cardboard ones made today. Not sure when they switched nor what year it was made but sure beats the stuff that's packaged today." A factor to consider: Brown and Williamson...

    The Oldest

I was gifted a small amount of ERRD from the 1940s, which required some rehydration. But, it was a distinct treat. Darker and smaller cut which rehydrated well enough. A deeper and richer taste than I recall from my first smoking of it in 1967, and a little bit of a bite to the smoke. I've...

    What are you smoking?

I started this crappy humid drizzling morning bustling about to get to work, only to forget my pouch. Thank God that i'm perceptive enough to stash a pouch of 5bros in the console of the van. So, 5Bros in an apple shaped Carey, also stashed in the console, for those "as needed' moments...

    Kaywoodie

I have about 20 KWs pre1970, and 3 of relatively recent development. THe old pieces are unqualifiably high quality and wellmade, if somewhat mundane. But, the newer pieces have a unique quality which make them worthy of collection.

    Thirty Years

Many congratulations. It was 31 years for me and SheWhoSpeaksLoudly (SWSL) in February, and it is about 1/2 one's life. I seriously can't think of a time when we weren't together. But, I always remember the adage: "if a tree falls in the forest, surely a husband can be blamed for it!" Best...
