Burley Round Up - What do you like and why?

I think it's important to distinguish here between burley and dark-fire-KY burley. It's just as importnat to distinguish latakia from other orientals because it's cured differently and therefore tastes much different. I'm trying to try more burleys these days. I think I have found that' I'm...

    Lost time: VA versus Bur

I love ODF. You have to remember that it's not just burley, but dark-fried KY that gives it that character. I love blends of VA and Ky, but have only discovered then in the last year or two. I sitll love straight VAs, but man, that DFK is great, too!

    Kentucky and Latakia??

They are different tobaccos before they are even cured. Lat is lower in nicotine but more smokey. The smoke character is campfire sort of smoky, sort of piney. KY is much stronger, and I often get woody notes and a BBQ/BBQ sauce sort of taste.

    Kentucky and Latakia??

There are a good many blends I've tried or heard of with KY and Lat. *HH Vintage Syrian--big latakia and has kentucky *Dan Old Ironsides--English blend with latakia *ACPC Heady Doctrine--VA-Cav-KY with a little latakia and Perique *H&H Blackhouse--English with KY *Sutliff Old San...

"The Ketchup Smell" - McClelland Red Va Blends

But they're not two answers, are they? Scottie noted they're the same leaf. The link notes they're different vintages. These seem to be two sides of the same coin. Scottie's focusing on the similarity of leaf source, link is focusing on the difference of crop year. I don't think there's a...

"The Ketchup Smell" - McClelland Red Va Blends

Thanks for the confirmation on that! The comparison to single-malt scotch is not right. Single Malt refers to the malt being processed and distilled from a single distillery, but is often blended with different batches over the years to maintain a consistent flavor--just like 5100. Single Cask...

"The Ketchup Smell" - McClelland Red Va Blends

They have a lot in common: both are done by McClelland, both are VAs, both are Red VAs, and if you read this thread, both are the SAME red VA leaf. The only differences are tinned vs. bulk, flake vs. ribbon, and single vintage vs. blended vintage (maybe).

    McClelland 2045

I actually ordered a bunch of lakelands recently, but tried to smell the bags to only use natural ones for shipping samples. I think 2045 does have a dominant smooth topping sort of flavor, so hopefully I didn't give you a bad example of what the blend is like.

"The Ketchup Smell" - McClelland Red Va Blends

Thanks! I was reminded of this thread by a post on another forum where a member said McCranie's Red Flake and 5100 have nothing in common.

    McClelland 2045

I actually just smoked a bowl of Sutliff Academy this morning. I've had several bowls before since I've been reviewing a lot of the Sutliff blends. I remember when I smoked my one bowl (so far) of 2045 that it tasted familiar, but I couldn't place it. Academy is what I was recalling. Sutliff...

    Checking In

I've just said a prayer and hope you will be doing better. I noticed you're from New Hope. I live a block off Old York Rd...40 minutes away just north of Philly, but just passed through New Hope on Sunday. Sometimes the world seems small. Again, I pray this new round of treatment will be beneficial.

    Retro-haling

I know what you mean, but for those who don't, I'll offer this perfection of language: You're inhaling smoke through your nose that you push out of your mouth with your tongue. The same smoke doesn't hit your lungs twice.
