Someone on this forum, who shall remain nameless unless he decides to chime in, was gracious to send me this interesting Grabow Viking with a spare bowl. The reason? He felt bad about my new meerschaum cracking at the shank. Class act, huh? :) Looks like I'm a Grabow owner once again.

Thank you so much. :) I've never had one of the "metal shank" pipes of any kind, I'm curious as to how they perform.

What a lovely gesture, so thoughtful and heartfelt, kudos to the sender and happy smoking to you Kyle.

So Mr. X (Ms. X?) sent you a metal pipe, knowing that you couldn't possibly break it...
Smart. 8)
And awfully nice of them!
That synth book looks interesting.

actually that pipe wanted to live with you, it told me so

your welcome I hope you enjoy it

Yes, Harlock, my brutish nature needs some solid pipes it needs. It's a damn good synth book, I think it's a 1977 print, has great theory/method sections! An old guitar shop in town was clearing out all these synth books that hadn't sold for decades, and I had an instant library, 20+ books, for a $1 a piece. There'd be no way I'd be able to build anything like that piecemeal. If you want an ISBN, let me know.

BC, you da man. :D

The engine block on my truck cracked due to the cold weather,,,I'm really heartbroken,,,I'll be waiting for the freight truck to pull into my driveway,, :lol!:

Seriously nice gesture and a fine gift Kyle. I've heard they smoke great, enjoy.

Good skills BC! Congratulations Kyle!

Arsehat.

Hey Kyle, I wouldn't mind betting there's some fine Briar under that nasty yellow lacquer, have you thought about stripping it to see what's under it?

...and lose my mustard-yellow bowl? But it screams "Technicolor, 1977, Ford Pintos, disco ties, butterfly collars," and "...cheap cocktails..!" Why on earth would I get rid of that?

That's just what I thought!

Just drop your pipe in the fish bowl as you come in...

Cue wah wah guitar and Rhodes electric piano soundtrack here... 8)

I have a Wurlitzer electric "spiner" piano that needs some work, but should accompany a good wah-guitar.

Funny y'all are teasin' this pipe, I swear, I must have known: I'm test-driving the Pinto of Pipes (with the yellow bowl) as we speak with some Billy Budd. I don't exactly remember BB tasting like this.

I'm giving the pipe a chance, it's performing admirably, but I very much so taste the metallic shank. I had a feeling I would, but it isn't unpleasant like the stingers one finds in pipes, it's just... different. For some reason it really tones down the Latakia, too. Weird, eh?

Wouldn't dream of it Kyle. That shank is the exact model of Viking I have. It's one of my favorite winter pipes. I only have boring brown briar bowls to go with it, though. Nothing as slick as that yellow one. :D

what color do you want George I have about 12 of them laying here I can sand one down and restain it for you, I have red, blue, green, oxblood, browns of various shades white, beige, tan, oh and maroon I don't have yellow or orange, they were out of yellow and after seeing how the orange turned out on cowboy's pipe I was scared of it

Yeah, GK, get you a fancy bowl from BC...the ones he sent me are about as nice as could be.

That Viking just needs some getting used to. I still need to find the right tobacco for it, even if it's just a steady diet of Carter Hall going into it. *shrug* It really makes the flavors different...just a matter of time before I find a good pairing.

I did have some chap ask if it was a crack pipe. My response: "You've lived in Reno how long?"

"About 30 years..."

I grimace..."...and you've never seen a real crack pipe?"

He walked away. I'm pretty sure he concluded that he didn't want to get into a snobbish debate about crack pipe identification with a crack head smoking his crack.

Reno. Keepin' it awkward.

I'm sure you'll find the right combo. I really enjoy mine so far 8 out of 8 of them are good smokers :)

It's the derned metal. Stingers used to give me hell until I figured out I could remove them. It's probably just me, I have a hard time eating with certain stainless steel utensils because the metal flavors just overpower the food.

The Viking is only slight, but I may have to get some really strong Latakia or high-octane Virginia in 'em to wash out the metallic taste. Otherwise, it performs really well. The design is kind of ingenious, especially where the bowl is drilled and meets that spur-shaped "wheel" at the bottom. Plus, they look kind of art deco/Rocketman-esque.
