I really can't explain why I like this pipe so much. In fact, part of why I like it is that I can't explain why I like it. It's like hearing a song and really digging it, even though it's not the kind of music you'd normally listen to in a million years.

It seems like the basket-weave style might be somewhat feminine, but I'm okay with that. Hey, I'm not embarrassed to order a petit filet mignon either (on those rare occasions when I find myself in a restaurant that has tablecloths and non-plastic cutlery). I think the dark tortoise shell stem helps balance it out. I'm picturing Bogie smoking it, maybe, while sailing a catboat around Cape Cod.

Snagged it off ebay for cheap. It was unclear who the maker was, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's a reputable maker.

Nice pipe. I can tell you're from Seattle; that pipe rest you're using is actually meant to protect your eyes from something we call "the sun". Just jerkin' yer chain, Java. (can I call you Java?) I like the basket weave pattern on that meer.

I don't think the basketweave is feminine at all. And you're right, it looks like a fine sailing pipe.

It is a very commonly used leather tooling pattern in western saddlery, in fact John Waynes saddle he used in his movies had some of that pattern of tooling and I've never heard of him being described as "feminine" As for a "sailing" pipe, don't know if I'd use just about any pipe on a sailboat, at least nothing under 30'-0" LOA But after a few decades of steady smoking it ought to color REALLY NICE!! Much like the thread on the art of chair caning, basket weave is NOT feminine. Rustic, artistic, textured, etc.--yes, feminine, no way.

My original comment was simply going to be, "Great carving of a traditional shape." I sometimes like the lattice-work meers, but I find them to be a bit intricate and ornate for my taste, but the "basket weave" gives it a warmth and a charm like no other.

PS, copious amounts of flowers, French curtains and Oprah episodes--those are feminine. :lol:

Thanks guys. I'm sure there's a thread somewhere around here for pipes that "grabbed you." I just read a bit of Greg Pease where he talks about a pipe "calling him from across the room." I can see what he means, for sure.

Kyle, "intricate and ornate" is a great way to put it and I feel the same way. I suspect I'll be wanting a couple more meers in the future but probably leaning towards ultra-traditional. Until I find that really, really sexy mermaid one.

George - the funny thing is, I have a bit of a reputation at work, and my usual stops, as "the guy who wears shades year-round." If I'm not wearing 'em, people comment. I call them my "psychic protection." My dad was the same way.

Now, I think this pipe is starting to get lonely. Let's see what's new on smokingpipes....
