You know, I'm surprised no one mentioned this in my good pipes for under a hundred bucks post. I didn't think of it myself. I have smoked several corn cobs over the years and enjoyed them all. Someone else mentioned that you can burn them up by smoking too long and hot. I have done this and it was a shame.

I think they sweeten the tobacco a bit as you smoke them for the first few times. Might be in my head, though.

I feel that way too, I've heard of people saying they get a displeasing wooden taste the first few smokes, however I did not. I got a slightly grainy sweetness shine through and it was most pleasing!

Sounds like you'd benefit form reading the Corncob Primer I wrote a few years ago.

Thanks Tiltjlp, I did use that link. A lot of good info there. So it appears that the verdic is in. Anyone who has experienced the Cob for more than a few bowls, can attest to their worth, when it comes to providing an excelent smoke, cobs rate with the best, Briars & Meers included.

is there a collection of pics or an archive of sorts of discontinued MM pipes? For a company to be around since the late 1800's (am I right?), I'd love to see the progression of their products.

Mainly I'm wanting to see the bulldog that was replaced in 2000.. but others as well...

I wish they would bring that shape back. by far the coolest cob design.

What would be awesome! Anyone have a half decent photo of this design? Some simple google'ing didn't turn up much, just some fuzzy, too-small pictures which weren't decipherable to my eyes at least.

On a side note I think a cob prince would be a pretty slick looking pipe. It'd probably be hard to pull off and need a wide cob but I think it'd be sweet nonetheless.

I have a couple of very good briars including Stanwell, GBD, Savinelli and Peterson. But I prefer my cobs with the cheapest, a Missouri Pride, being my favourite.

They are such amazing smokers and so easy to maintain. And they take any kind of tobacco in their stride. I'm not going to invest in any more briars but I will buy some more cobs.

Well, we could start an email, telephone, written letter/ etc. request line going in to MM to bring back the Bulldog.
This could be spread to other pipe smoking forums as well, with enough interest we might at least get a small run.

We're sure not out anything by trying!

I know that I alone would be willing to purchase a dozen of these (should last a while if taken care of), maybe more.

Anyone else up for this?

Nevermind the above post, new thread started for the idea of trying to get MM to bring back the Bulldog.

Sorry guys, didn't want to hijack a thread or knock it off track.

I used to have a picture of the Bulldog, but can't seem to find it. I do know the staright Bulldog had a diamond shank, which might be the reason it was discontinued. I just sent Phil, the MM general manager, a follow-up email after a phone call with him, suggesting, among other things, a revival of the Bulldog. Next time I talk to Phil, I'll let you know what he has to say.

In fact, I think the Great Dane Egg might be the Bulldog minus the diamond shank and the amber stem.

Meanwhile, at Corn Cob Headquarters...

Is there any difference between the gentleman and diplomat? I want to order one and I think I've narrowed it down to these two. From my own studying, the only difference is the finish, and one has a very slightly larger bowl than the other.

Also, is it hard to pass a pipe cleaner through the bent stems? They seem more of a kink than a bend.

Do you guys have any other preference over the two that I mentioned above? As this will be my first cob, I want one that will give me a better understanding of what it means to smoke a cob. Sounds stupid I know. I guess a legend would be better off for this, but they just seem too small to me.. I may throw one of those in with my order just for kicks..

The Country Gentleman is has a very slightly larger inner bowl size than the Diplomat, which has a hardwood bottom, and the outer bowl of the CC is blackened. As for the bent bits or stems, the newly improved and remolded Danish Bit has no problem at all with pipe cleaners. I've smoked both, and prefer the Diplomat. If you want to learn more about cobs before buying one, you can check out my Cob Primer, and also my Buyers Guide. The link below is for the Primer, which has a link to the Buyers Guide.

The main difference between the two is that the Diplomat has a hardwood bottom insert. I have one of each and both are great smokers. The Diplomat should last longer though and it looks more like a "normal" pipe. No problem to pass a pipecleaner through it's stem.

There might be too many pipes here by some folks account and there ar alwyas several "cobs" in the rotation. I have lost several pipes over the 30-40 years I have been smoking. Cobs are great for hunting, fishing and camping trips, no big loss if they disappear. One of my favorite varieties had to be Wanghees. The stems were bamboo and they had the hardwood plug in the bottom. There is one at the cabin which is in a lovat shape and it must be 30 years old. It still smokes great. Those with the hardwood plugs seem to last the longest.

The cobs with the bamboo shanks, were the best cobs that I have ever had.
During the late sixties and early seventies I owned several of them. I took them everywhere with me,Those pipe were really sharp, not to mention the great smoke.
Although I thought they were MM. Did MM make a modle with bamboo shank?

"There's a story behind every bowl"

MM did make the models with the bamboo shank. As I recall they were not always available. I was able to purchase mine from pipe shops not in drug stores. Back in the 70's there was another company which made corn cob pipes besides MM. The name may have been Buescher. I call also remember a brand of cobs called Irvin S. Cobb. A neighbor smoked the cheaper cob with the diamond shank, always straight stem and his tobacco was "5 Brothers". Wonder if MM has considered bringing back the bamboo shank model?

I remember them well.
Bamboo is not hard to grow.
