MM did make the models with the bamboo shank. As I recall they were not always available. I was able to purchase mine from pipe shops not in drug stores. Back in the 70's there was another company which made corn cob pipes besides MM. The name may have been Buescher. I call also remember a brand of cobs called Irvin S. Cobb. A neighbor smoked the cheaper cob with the diamond shank, always straight stem and his tobacco was "5 Brothers". Wonder if MM has considered bringing back the bamboo shank model?

I just spoke to Phil this morning, and the reason they stopped offering bamboo shanks was the quality of the bamboo. He plans to look into finding a reliable source for bug-free bamboo, and if he can, will make them available, at least on a limited-run basis.

My Pony Express MM is my best friend out in the field, as I'm a geologist. Besides being a perfect smoker, he serves as a scale bar in photos of various geological strucures too!
