Prepping myself for the onslaught from those who love them: I have never been able to get next to cobs. I've owned a few, including a big ol' Douglas MacArthur styled one. I don't remember them smoking poorly or anything, but then I don't remember them smoking great either. I guess my main prejudice is that a nice briar is just so much more attractive, and I'd rather have one of those sticking out of my face

Cobs are for yard work for me. If I break a cob, I can buy another. If I break a Peterson, I might cry.

A friend ran destroyed his favorite pipe, a Peterson System, the other day. It will take time to identify the new favorite and the destroyed one will always be remembered.

I knew a doctor who was a pipe smoker in the late 80's and asked him about it. After dismissing cigarettes and cigars because of health reasons he told me smoking a pipe using non aromatic tobaccos in a cob and not inhaling was the safest way to enjoy tobacco. Throw away the cob when it gets gunked up.

I enjoy my cobs mainly for Lakeland aromatics which might ghost my Petersons. Personally I prefer briar but I don’t dislike smoking my cobs. I guess it depends a lot on my mood and the tobacco I fancy smoking.

I've enjoyed them for various reasons like those already mentioned. To me, they smoke cool, especially a raw cob, I can light them with about anything with no worries about them rim, and they usually smoke down to mostly ash without a fuss. I've had times when tobacco gave better or new tastes in a cob, but that has been more frequent in briars. I have 4 cobs with the largest being an MM General.

They sometimes have artificial flavors and carrier substances that can become carcinogenic at pipe smoking temps. Food grade additives are not tested at pipe bowl temperatures.

Idle, love me a cob but you're entitled to your own opinion of them. Have you smoked one past the break in stage?

I find simpler tobaccos work best in a cob like burley blends or straight Virginia blends though my Latakia blends smoke pretty well too.

I felt that way for years. I didn't want to look like a "rube" smoking a cob. Now I see it as a type of "pipe pageantry", a persona I embrace while I'm smoking. More down to earth than my mood when I'm smoking something I feel is more formal, sophisticated, scholarly, or sage. My pipe selection is highly influenced by the impression I want to project or the way I want to feel while I'm smoking. I suppose you could call it a form of "cosplay".

I hear you, they are cheap but that's part of what I like about them. The disposable factor and who cares if you lose one, just grab another for a few bucks.

I've long given up on living my life to please other people, so I smoke one of my cobs whenever the spirit dictates and regulations allow. I have quite a few cobs, some of which I seldom or never smoke, such as the unwieldy General MacArthur.

I love the lightness, history, variety, and the affordability of cobs. I reckon they are great smokers. A mate married a french lass and they had the ceremony in France and he was gifted some briar pipes and bought a few while he was there. I gave him a cob and he smokes it as much if not more than the fancy ones. He loves it and bought a few more. A cob was my first pipe purchase and I also like the fact I don't have to baby them in any way. Dont care what lighter I use or if I drop it ect.

Corncob pipes are also my favorite type of pipe. Compared with traditional metal or ceramic pipes, corncob pipes have their unique advantages.

First of all, the natural material of corncobs makes the entire pipe more natural and comfortable to use. It is not only beautiful and generous, but also comfortable to hold.

In short I can sum cobs up in one sentence I.F "they give me a pipe smoking hard on a cat couldn't scratch" sorry I have had a few bundy rums

Eh, can't say as the 'natural material' of corn cobs was ever a draw for me; unlike the natural material found in briar or Meerschaum pipes.

My brother-in-law, on the other hand, spends as much on new cob pipes as I do on vintage estate briars. Whatever makes the heart happy, right?
