I know; weird question. But, a recent conversation with other pipemakers regarding the style of the slot has left me wondering: do you touch the end of the stem with your tongue while you smoke? I don't recall seeing this covered on any of the forums and just assumed that most do not so as to not get slobber in the airway. How about you?

I must be weird, but I do. I kind of use my tongue as a valve to block off the end of the stem so I can control when I get smoke.

I'm not really sure why I smoke this way, it's just the way my technique developed.

Am I the only one? Have I been doing it all wrong? :affraid: :affraid:

(By the way Wayne, I don't care if the slot has square sides or rounded sides. Makes no difference to me at all.)

I try not to, but I, like Todd, sometimes use my tongue to act as a smoke valve....so I guess its about 50/50 for me.

LOL, I totally do, but I only do it to see if the button I made is comfortable :D . I'm in the camp of those that think that if it's in your mouth it should be smooth and comfortable. (I know, I just opened myself up for all kinds of awesome remarks on that one) But that's how I think it should be.

Think of it this way, if you put a sucker in your mouth, and it's been poured or cast (or whatever they do to make suckers) with a rough or sharp spot on it, you're tongue will find the rough spot unfavorable. Like a chipped tooth, you'll wear your tongue out messing with the sharp part.

I also wonder if it's a fidget type thing, those that typically fidget with things in their hands do the same with their tongues?

Them's my thoughts anyway.

Yup - totally leaving that one alone. Don't want this thread to end up in the RR.

I do also as Todd I use my tounge as a valve as I am a mouth breather. MIKE

Weird question. But an honest one.

When I talk while smoking, I'll use my tongue to block the airway so "B" and "P" sounds don't send embers and ash into my lap.

Otherwise, not on purpose.

Not that I'm aware of, but now all of us will be thinking about tonguing the next time we have a pipe. . . . :affraid:
