Do You Tongue Your Pipes?

I know; weird question. But, a recent conversation with other pipemakers regarding the style of the slot has left me wondering: do you touch the end of the stem with your tongue while you smoke? I don't recall seeing this covered on any of the forums and just assumed that most do not so as to not get slobber in the airway. How about you?

I must be weird, but I do. I kind of use my tongue as a valve to block off the end of the stem so I can control when I get smoke.

I'm not really sure why I smoke this way, it's just the way my technique developed.

Am I the only one? Have I been doing it all wrong? :affraid: :affraid:

(By the way Wayne, I don't care if the slot has square sides or rounded sides. Makes no difference to me at all.)

I did at one time, but the added moisture in the airway plus smoking aromatics only made things worse.

I try not to, but I, like Todd, sometimes use my tongue to act as a smoke valve....so I guess its about 50/50 for me.

LOL, I totally do, but I only do it to see if the button I made is comfortable . I'm in the camp of those that think that if it's in your mouth it should be smooth and comfortable. (I know, I just opened myself up for all kinds of awesome remarks on that one) But that's how I think it should be.

Think of it this way, if you put a sucker in your mouth, and it's been poured or cast (or whatever they do to make suckers) with a rough or sharp spot on it, you're tongue will find the rough spot unfavorable. Like a chipped tooth, you'll wear your tongue out messing with the sharp part.

I also wonder if it's a fidget type thing, those that typically fidget with things in their hands do the same with their tongues?

Them's my thoughts anyway.

Weird question. :scratch: But an honest one.

When I talk while smoking, I'll use my tongue to block the airway so "B" and "P" sounds don't send embers and ash into my lap.

Otherwise, not on purpose.
