OK - Having a little fun here. But seriously...

Early Morning Pipe - Dunhill. New issue, being a 2012 purchase as far as I know. I obtained it in a recent purchase here for the tidy sum of three bucks. Nice.

That being said, I am not in any way a Latakia person. I used to be, years ago. But now I can count the blends I smoke that contain Latakia one one hand. In fact, aside from GLPease Samarra (which somehow works so well in terms of balance and sweetness for me, it is a singular experience) this EMP may be able to nudge its way into the number two position. That might be because the Latakia is pretty far back. There are over 350 reviews on this at the Review site so certainly it has all been said before. And having been around since about 1912 and popular enough to be a fairly continuous supply, there are many, many pipe smokers that think well enough of it to make the purchase. Reviews range, of course, from hate it, don't get it, to it's OK...up to claiming it's blended in the Holy Grail. That last must be a figurative comment. The thing that struck me foremost was that it was 'easy'. It packed and burned well and stayed lit with little attention. Apparently mostly Virginias with a little Oriental (including a smidgen of the evil L) it was likable to this first timer. I'll beg off going into more detail as I was fiddling with some file work (like with a file and a piece of steel). But maybe it's that kind of thing. Easy to use, easy to like, easy to manage while being otherwise occupied. That alone would make it popular I think.

And for three bucks...it's a winner in my book.

Been many yrs since I had EMP. Have positive memories of it, but like you BH I'm on the out with Lat blends these days. At least those where the Lat weed is pronounced.

Perhaps I should revisit.

Cheers,

RR

You should revisit Brewdude. The latakia is way in the background.:flower:

Yep, that's EMP. Its a little tame on the lat side for my tastes, but smokes so well, I keep a few tins around. I recently opened a tin of Nightcap and was reminded on how strong that blend is (too much by my taste). I decided to mix equal parts of EMP and Nightcap and viola, my new favorite mixture. It's similar to MM965, but less the Black Cavendish. I wish I'd have read this yesterday, I could have put a sample in your package.

Black Cav in MM965? I don't think so.

Now EMP....not for me. I know I am the odd man out on this blend but I've been meaning to post a so-so review on tobaccoreviews.com

Ari...with over 350 other reviews on EMP over there, you certainly won't be the only one that thinks it's so-so.

I cracked open a tin I have had for a while when I emptied my last Lat blend jar I was working through. I agree. It's light and didn't turn me green in the lingering summer heat. A little nuttiness, a little sweet but not too much. A really good mild blend that still has a little relaxing vitamin N.

I'm going to be keeping some close by for sure. Like you said... easy.

I opened a tin of year old (which I don't consider 'aged' by any stretch) of my favorite Dunhill this morning...Royal Yacht. Lots of flavor, light in Vit. N, and just as easily managed as about anything I've smoked. Again, something one needn't pay attention to in terms of taking care to smoke it 'just so' to glean all that it has to offer. Again, some love it, others dis it...but an absolute classic.

I have to concur with your assessment of RY. It's my "go to" daily bac now as I have at least 3 to 4 bowls of it a day. A definite "CLASSIC" to be sure
