OK - Having a little fun here. But seriously...
Early Morning Pipe - Dunhill. New issue, being a 2012 purchase as far as I know. I obtained it in a recent purchase here for the tidy sum of three bucks. Nice.
That being said, I am not in any way a Latakia person. I used to be, years ago. But now I can count the blends I smoke that contain Latakia one one hand. In fact, aside from GLPease Samarra (which somehow works so well in terms of balance and sweetness for me, it is a singular experience) this EMP may be able to nudge its way into the number two position. That might be because the Latakia is pretty far back. There are over 350 reviews on this at the Review site so certainly it has all been said before. And having been around since about 1912 and popular enough to be a fairly continuous supply, there are many, many pipe smokers that think well enough of it to make the purchase. Reviews range, of course, from hate it, don't get it, to it's OK...up to claiming it's blended in the Holy Grail. That last must be a figurative comment. The thing that struck me foremost was that it was 'easy'. It packed and burned well and stayed lit with little attention. Apparently mostly Virginias with a little Oriental (including a smidgen of the evil L) it was likable to this first timer. I'll beg off going into more detail as I was fiddling with some file work (like with a file and a piece of steel). But maybe it's that kind of thing. Easy to use, easy to like, easy to manage while being otherwise occupied. That alone would make it popular I think.
And for three bucks...it's a winner in my book.
