A good friend of mine, (at least he use to be until he sent me this), sent me some Gawith,Hoggarth Black Cherry Twist rope he's had for about 5 or more years plus about a pound or more of Bennigton's Special Blend that he picked up about the same time in Boca Raton, FL.
(which is really all there blends dumped in to one bag at the end of the month, you name it's in there. LOL!) Anyway back to the Black Twist. At first seeing it in it's zip-lock baggie I thought he fished it out of toilet, after a risky closer examination I found it to be more like a long bent cigar.
Well, after having it for a week now I figured I'd try it tonight and sliced off a good hunk and sliced it up into manageable pieces and stuffed it in my POS no name. Moisture was fairly decent and about right so I liter up, which took a little doing at first. The first draw was like a fairly strong cigar with a slight essence of black cherry, not bad. The further down I went the more the cigar taste took over, still not too strong and no real nic kick was detected. The room note, yep! Cigar, I reckon that's tolerable to some. Didn't really care for it that much, would rather stuff a cigar in my face then smoke one in my pipe. So if you like the taste of Black Cherry flavored Cigars in your pipe I reckon you'll like this. Now remember this is well aged so new stuff might just come up and grab ya. So, I'm going to cut a small plug off it, say about an inch or so and rest is up for grabs, if you dare.

If you guys wanna taste something weird get a hunk of the Sweet Coconut Twist. I don't have the words to describe it, let alone review it. It's truly bizarre and pretty strong too.

Lol! Yes they look like something from out of the cat box, but they are actually quite good. They smoke well in smaller pipes. Never felt the desire to try a big pipeful. Like Chris says the coconut is unique to say the least. I may just have to break down and order some more of these, as I can't seem to find the ones I had. (I hate moving, it takes forever to find everything again)

I ordered a 1 oz piece of G&H Rum Twist Rope coming in my next TAD. Hopefully I won't have the gags and spins!  :lol!:

Coconut? I don't know about that, I'm not much for aro's anymore but, it might nice to find a Vaper rope, if there is such a thing. Wait a second, rolls are ropes just sliced.....never mind. Duh! :fpalm:

Ron they're really not like aeros at all. They are more along the lines of scented. When you first light it you can smell the coconut but after a few puffs its mostly just a background aroma that makes very brief appearances and then disappears again. It's really odd kinda like you're smoking and somebody walks by with a tray of fresh cooked coconut macaroons. I'm not a coconut fan but I kinda like it in this instance.

Jim, That's about how this Black Cherry Twist was but, it was just too cigarish for me. Now if it had a richer tobacco flavor say like a sweet hay Virgina with some earthy tones I might have liked it.
I'm going to try some SG Black XX rope next month if they still have in stock and see if that'll kick start me. But, I'm afraid that'll be the end of my rope experimentation for awhile.

Haven't tried the Black XX. I don't think it's gonna be any closer to what you're looking for. From what I understand all of the ropes are very cigar like but the black ropes supposedly taste heavily of creosote. Personally not a flavor I look for. The ropes are great fun but something I only occasionally turn to for a change of pace. Now if I could find a source for the twist tobaccos I started out on back in the 80's I'd be all over that. Those had the rich sweet va profile that I have spent years looking for in other blends.

Crazy Crow Trading Post used to sell them but they stopped that because of the credit card companies. They may still have them but I'm not driving a thousand miles to find out

Jim, Now those seriously look like something my dog dropped.(too much protein in his diet) LOL!
Well, we'll give it a try and if I don't like it I'm sure someone here will jump at the chance
to defile there pipe and taste buds with free rope.

That is a nice looking pipe, Cart.

Is POS a name brand from London?

Just kidding.

It smokes real well with the right tobacco, it's a bit picky.
Because it's that way and not marked with anything else other then "Imported Briar" including it has a flat spot on the front of the bowl, I call it my P.O.S. pipe.
But it feels good in the hand and is only 5" long so it's great for a quick smoke of flake.

GH Rum twist is my favorite in this category. Cutting it thin, like no thinker than the width of a dime, was the key for my enjoyment of them. I then rub it out. In a large bowl all these ropes have the potential to turn me green. I am no heavy weight in the N dept however. Fun stuff to take on the road. Does anyone know how far back rope tobacco can be documented? Would be fun to use at an eighteenth century enactment, but i like to look authentic. Stuff some in a clay pipe and fire at will.

Kelhammer any of the ropes or twists like I posted earlier are period appropriate. As to dates for ropes Gawith has been producing them since they opened their doors so 1790's. According to their website their original equipment was all second hand and dated to about 1750 or earlier. Hope this helps.

This thread reminded me that brother Kyle had sent me a rope to try. It has been drying out for several months...chopped it up and put it in the bowl....not bad at all, taste the cigar leaf more than anything but was pleasant. Black Cherry Twist was the name.

Thanks for the reminder....us old folks are that way.
