...I've recently been plowing through William L. Shirer's magnum opus The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.
Yup...I know it well—a superb work. In fact, I plan to read it again soon.

I'm currently devouring William Manchester's The Last Lion: Winston Spencer Churchill...my second time for the first two volumes, which is why much of this stuff is fresh in my mind. The third and final volume (completed by Paul Reid at the request of his mentor, Mr. Manchester, who was unable to finish the work before his death) wasn't published until 2012. November. So, I'm going back to the beginning to get the full flavor of the work before I dive into Volume 3 for the first time.

I swear...the doggone book reads like a novel, and it's all the more gripping because it's actual history. It whitewashes nothing, revealing Churchill and his contemporaries with all their warts, as well as their more positive attributes. The author's research is unimpeachable. In fact, in Volume 2 (Alone 1932-1940) he often cites William L. Shirer, who was a correspondent for Universal News Service and CBS in the prewar years. and remained a CBS correspondent throughout the war.

I must say that it is always a pleasure to find a weed brothah who appreciates the value and importance of history. As George Santayana wrote, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Alas, I haven't found any evidence that Santayana was a pipe smoker.

Yo Vito - You're right about William L. Shirer, being a correspondent for Universal News Service and CBS in the prewar years. and remaining a CBS correspondent throughout the war. He was a protoge of Edward R. Murrow. And - get this - was a pipe smoker extraordinaire! Hence his inclusion on this thread is indeed fortuitous. Happy reading bro.

Wow! Seven hundred plus hits to this thread. Shows there's some interest in famous pipe smokers of the past. I'm impressed. It signifies that as pipe smokers were are cognizant of those who came before us. I don't know if folks want to continue the thread or not. I'll leave that up to you. Most of you are probably familiar with Joseph Cruse Johnson from Memphis, TN. He is the originator of the Famous Pipe Smokers web site. I've included the link below. Highly recommended and worth your while.

Here's another source for ya. It's a French pipe site and all the info is in French, but it has some really neat smokers in it. Mostly French, literati, artists, and such but theirs a bunch

Yeah, I know that one. It's OK. But there's no information. Just a snap and a name. Joseph Cruse Johnson on the other hand is far more extensive. He's done research to pull together the bios on 100s of famous pipe smokers, why the smoked a pipe, etc. Really well worth reading if you enjoy the historical aspects of pipe smoking.

Here's his blurb:

"I originally started this blog as a pipe club while I was attending college in Blue Mountain, MS. I was doing research on famous pipe smokers to promote more awareness of all the pipe smokers out there in the world and in doing so found a way to show the world that pipe smoking is not just for old retired men but for doctors, lawyers, scientists, ministers, politicians, sports figures, and even those wonder pipe smoking women. I became interested in pipes as a young boy when I saw Melvyn Douglas and Cary Grant smoking pipes in Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House. Ten years later when I turned 18 years old I went to the local tobacco store and bought three pipes all three made by Savinelli, which I still have to this day, and bought two pounds of different blends of tobacco. Almost ten years later and those three pipes have turned into over a hundred pipes, and yes I do smoke all them, I rotate them out every day and some two or three times a day depending on how much I smoke them. My goal for this blog was to show people of all different colors, religions, and ages that pipe smoking is not prejudiced".

Monbla - He used to say "Not tonight Helen, I got a headache." Remember?
