I'm a New Piper HELP !!!

Yo, i reside in southern Indiana. Hoosier land. Anyhow i decided to kick cigar smoking to the curb because i was spending too much money on expensive cigars . Well here i am. So far
- Bought a 60 dollar Erik Nording pipe , and a corn cob
- Bought Mac baren , Navy Flake, Vanilla Cream Flake, Mixture(scottish blend) , HH Vintage Syrian( a latakia)
- Bought Erik Nording Hunters Blend 'fox hound' (a latakia)
- Bought Esoterica Tobacciana 'dunbar'

Well I think i should have just started here first. I like all the above tobaccos with the exception of the latakias which i really enjoy but give me a headache. Today i went to my tobacconist shop in bloomington indiana called the 'briar and the burley', i told the guy i wanted to sample some of their burley's and virginias that they sell as their thier 'company blends 'so that i can let the guy know which i liked so he could recommend something like it in a more premium brand name. I sampled a burley which was good however a bit boring , and then i sampled what i was told was a virginia yet it had a 'nutty' sweet taste to it and i loved it absolutely thouroughly enjoyed it. But i was told that local tobaccanist blends arent very reliable tobaccos so i asked the guy behind the counter what would compare to the blend that was so nutty and sweet. Well he recommended something from Esoterica Tobacciana which says is blended for butera by jf germain and sons. So i bought it and well it somewhat resembles the local blend but truly overall misses the mark of what i tasted in the local blend. Anyways that local blend really sent e into a frenzy of sorts to find more like it that are maybe even better being the local blend really as i have been told isnt neccasarily a premium tobacco. So anyways i have decided that if i buy 1 tin a week i will still be saving money vs my cigar habit . Anyone got any recommendations?

Well, I'd suggest my own Storm Front, from 4noggins. It is a mixture of two burleys and cigar leaf, which most everyone who has tried it likes. You can read the reviews both at 4noggins and at Tobacco Reviews.

Sounds like the Virginia you tried contained some sweetened burley or some orientals...

What was the name of the blend? I would be happy to call the shop and see what else might be in there.

Going blind I will say to give Rattray's Highland Targe a try, but with some more info I will be able to give more recommendations...

The name of the blend was called "30 th Anniversary" . Briar & the Burley is the name of the shop. It is in bloomington indiana. I wasnt sure how the 'in store blends' worked. Didnt know if they blended them themselves or what.

Those blends are most often just relabled stockebye, lane, or milan blends, though they may be tinkered with or mixed from scratch - runs the gamut..

If a Stokkebye, I'm guessing it's this one...

Possibly a hint of berry. I am not as intune with y taste buds as most pipe smokers are. But like i said im looking for premium tobaccos instead of capn black. Still dont know if i will be an aromatics smoker or not. That 30 th anniversary blend was supposed to be a virginia blend , id liek to find tobaaccos like it with a bit more nicotine and also different flavors maybe that i may like just as well. I did an interntet search on nutty flavored tobacco found one that fit the description or what i thought fit the description from Butera called kingfisher but they are hard to coe accross. Anyways im sure ill find some . i just gonna stick to buying 1 tin a week so i need to figure out which one ill buy next week.

Nutty flavor is often associated with the significant presence of burley, which is often blended with Virginias. I'd say, if you like that kind of flavor, you might give Mac Baren London Burley Blend a shot. It's mostly burleys with some supplemental Virginias. It's a really subtle, milder type tobacco, that comes to life about halfway through the bowl.

Gave the Briar and Burley a shout and enquired as to the details on the 30th Aniv. blend - they do indeed claim it's straight virginia, ribbon cut.

I would say if you like it in particular, get yourself some more

And don't worry so much. Just enjoy smoking your pipe and all the packing methods, tobacco blends, cleaning supplies, brands, pipe brand lineages and grades, etc., etc. will become clearer over time. It never really ends,which is why pipe smoking is a fun hobby.

Your list is missing perique, cigar leaf (counts as pipe tobacco as far as I'm concerned), and the variety of oriental and turkish tobaccos.


- Perique, Latakia, and cigar leaf are exclusively condiments imo; some smoke Lat as a base.

- VA can be a good smoke by itself or a base for a blend.

- Burley usually acts as a base for a blend. Burley is good, but usually need some kind of condinent.

- Cavendish and the turkish/ orientals I've had can sit by themselves, act as a base for a blend, or act as a condiment.

As far as a tasty all cav blend, try Trout Stream.

I'll second the vote for you to try John's 'Stormfront' via 4Noggins. I've tried at least every TYPE of tobacco blend possible over the past 30 years and it's easily the finest of it's genre...a "Burley blend PLUS". The cigar leaf really adds a second deep dimension to the sweet and nutty base, astonishing that its simplicity allows such depth. Note: Cigar Leaf rarely if ever gives a pipe tobacco blend a cigar-like flavor, instead adding depth and character to a blend. Like many other Burley blends it has to be smoked a certain way...it wants to flash burn in its initial stages so you have to hold back a little and resist freight train puffing (as you likely should with anything) and keep a light tamp on the bowl. Then about half way in it settles down and the cigar leaf comes more into play and the flavor deepens and darkens and becomes even more wonderfull. Again...slow and steady wins the race.

BLM: I so totally resonate with your recent decision in both rationale and personal history. A friend of mine is also undergoing the same re-engineering process. I like to think of it as getting twenty times more for your 'leaf dollar'. A couple of recent tests completed by yours truely showed that an $12 two ounce tin of the very highest quality pipe tobacco (the same as one of today's moderately priced cigars) resulted in the enjoyment of TWENTY bowls. I never really want to tout this kind of statistic too loudly...you know...THEY might be listening and realize how stupid it all is. Some day it'll be like gas prices and they'll jack us through the clouds, but til then I'll enjoy laughing all the way to my B&M.

You are also thinking of sending out free pounds of your blends to those who have loved and supported you with their kind words. You may go on about your business. Hey thankls alot i'll put me in an order of it. Maybe ill get a lot of what i like and age it / put it away ill at least have a little before they raise the price if they ever do.

Do and online search for pipe shows and if you find one close enough you can make it to, You will really enjoy it, You can talk with lots of pipe smokers willing to share their knowledge and experineces, get samples ot try and see some wonderful pipes that will make you want a collection,

I have enjoyed smoking a pipe for many years but my first show really opened the flood gates of enjoyment. Being able to talk to seasoned pipe smokers for advice and recommendations of tobacco right there on hand, Just being in the presence of people with a common interest is great.

There is one in Richmond VA this weekend I am looking forward to after going to the first one I wish I could attend them all !

Also there may be local pipe clubs that meet regualry in your area also a great way to learn more about the world of pipe smoking, :cheers:
