McCelland Blackwoods Flake

Well finally tried my first bowl of McClelland blends and I thought maybe guys were exaggerating about the ketchup smell in the tin. Well they are not, LOL! Most say that they don't taste it, but I have to say on first light and for a tiny bit after I could ever so slightly taste it too. However soon that taste was gone. I must say this Virgina tobacco is a good bit different than others. I mean the biggest taste is still close to others, but it definitely has it's own flavors. Don't know where this will fall as far as my favorites and have found it's way to early to say much.

Heck it took me almost an whole OZ. to know I liked Opening Night so no judgement here yet.

Every once in a while, I'll get a big mouthful of heinz 57 on the initial light. But once it goes away, its all good 8)

With the way cars are now it has just jumbled my brain. I use to know what every care looked like when cars use to look different. So what 1950's is that Chevy? Is it a 57? or could it be 55-56 or a 58? Some of my favorites from back then and have a strong like for 55's and I guess next is 57.

Hey Skip,

You are right in there. That is my 57 Bel Air I bought about four years ago. I am close to having it finished. I lack paint and interior work and she will be done. It is a everyday driver for me. About a year ago the original 283 cracked an oil gallery so I built and nastied up a 350 for it. It drives like a dream.
I do a lot of Tri Five work for customers (55, 56 and 57) and love em all but the 57 is my favorite.

The "ketchup" smell will definitely tone down as the tobacco is exposed to air/ jar time. When you first open it, it's pretty strong, but this will dissipate until it's almost an afterthought. A classic virginia, and a favorite of mine. Enjoy!

Agreed wit you TB!
I do not mind the smell at all but it does bug some people.
It does go away. It is evident in alot of McClelland VA blends, especially Christmas Cheers!

I love me some Black Woods. I went through my first tin pretty quick, It seems 100 g of moist Black woods looks about half as much tobacco as a drier flake such as renier's long golden. I found there to be some tangy vinegary tastes upon initial lights, but the flavor settled down very nicely after that. It instantly rocketed into my top 5 VA's... so I bought a tin of it on ebay that was dated 2002...

The time it spent in the sealed tin definitely toned down the vinegary smell and taste in tin note and charring lights. Some Jar time will lead to further crystallization on the flakes and an even milder and sweeter taste.

I have an order in for Dark Star and cant wait to compare. I also love the personal Reserve blends 22,24, and hope to try 27.

Skip, Chevy... Nice to see some other guys in Texas enjoying fine VA flake tobacco's. Our local tobacconists here have cut down drastically on tin sales due to high taxes.

Hey there onabullit,
You are right on there. I visit our local B&M rarely anymore and have started ordering all of my tobacco online. The local pipe selection has declined steadily and their tobacco selection has faired worse.
