Oh, I grew up in N. Madison, right near your neck of the woods!

Whitfield on Rt. 1 in Guilford might have some tins... they used to have the Ashton blends. The tobacconist (Tobacco Road, I think it's called) on Rt. 1 in Old Saybrook (near Action Sports) is also a question mark, but you could always call and ask.

Since you're close by anyway, the other thing you can do is lety me know if you notice I'm smoking anything that interests you; I'll set aside a sample and we can figure out a handoff time. My buddy is getting married at Deer Lake; I'll probably be out there more than once.

I did try Whitfield, they didn't have any tinned, so I got a couple Oz's of Cav. and there store blend to try.
Other than those and something I had when we lived in Ga. anything would interest me.

Deer Lake is very close to us. How cool is that!

I'll second Harlock999's Presbyterian recommendation (it really doesn't get much better than Presbyterian) and add Esoterica's Margate and Balkan Sasieni to the mix -- all readily available. GL Pease's Abingdon is a must try, and McClelland's AM Pipe and 3 Oaks offerings are also worth sampling. Worth mentioning as well is Ashton Artisan's Blend... the list could go on and on. Carlos is right, "English blend" covers a lot of ground; to my mind, it's something along the lines of English/Balkan/Oriental.

The advice from sand18f is on the money: Start off on the right foot and don't drive yourself to frustration hunting down hard-to-find tins. If you come across Penzance, Squadron Leader, or the like, snatch it up, but if you don't, don't worry about it. There are dozens of great blends out there that you can regularly find in stock and at a fair price.

And I too will make the magnanimous offer of taking any of the blends mentioned above off your hands -- free of charge -- if you decide you don't like them. Well, almost free; just PM me, and I'll let you know how much the shipping will cost you. :lol!:

I used to do the pipe thing in my 20s. I haven't used tobacco for around 30 years untill I started smoking Cigars for about the last 3 years. I just started back on pipes because they taste and smell better to me and the wifey is much happier, altho I still torch a stick every now and then.
SO......I have a question for you vets about the more popular tobaccos in tins. ( I have only used drug store and some bulk). The B&Ms around do not carry any save for a B&M in New Haven and they are limited to Dunhill and one other, Mc... something. I would like do an on line order however I am in need of HELP. I would like to try English, and Aromatic blends rather than Sweetened stuff. So if you guys don't mind shooting a few of your favorites and good sorces to purchase them.
I would be a Happy Camper.

I think I posted this on the wrong forum (in the welcome page).

Can you say NOOB 8)
Another new guy here so don't feel like you're the odd man out. I went to one of the posts that list "Your Top 5 tobaccos" and just looked for a common thread. I started with a few off the smokingpipes.com website of their top 10 tinned tobaccos. Lots of options. I particularly like Bob's Chocolate Flake, Chelsea Morning and Blue Mountain. Just ordered a tin of Squadron Leader, 8oz of Penzance and Stonehaven. I'll let you know.

I'll second smokingpipes.com. Lowest prices, great selection. Ditto Mars.

Although I haven't smoked them, the Stokkebye bulks have been enjoyed by many forum members; they are way-cheap, and both the vendors above stock them.

I am also wanting to try Squadron Leader, Penzance, and Stonehaven. They have been mentioned alot around here. Let me know what you think.

Ok vets I just received a tin of Balkan Sasieni and Presbyterian.
The Balkan was ok, the wife didn't care for it, the Presbyterian was a little better.
I would like to get a more flavorfull tobacco.
I'm not sure how to describe it ( NOOB HERE ) but maybe sweeter and more aromatic?.
What say you..........

In my limited experience aromatics will give you a good room note but not much else. I have struggled to find one so far that delivers in taste for me rather than acting as a glorified air freshener :D

Ya know, I've only smoked one bowl of the Balkan, and having never smoked an English blend I was a bit overwelmed by the taste (prolly cause I only smoked the sweeter stuff). I kept thinking about that aroma and taste for hours after that first bowl. Here's what I came up with: rich, leathery, nutty and earthy. What do you English blend smokers think about that discreption,am I close?
I think i'm liking it.... ......Today i'm going to hit the Presby, if my tongue can take it. :lol!:

Try the Gawith and Hoggarth 2oz samples of Glenngary Flake100% Virginia tobaccos. The subtle addition of flavors gives this bright flake a Honey aroma. Cool and sweet.

Gawith and Hoggarth's Ennerdale Flake is a high quality tobacco.

I appreciate your input, and I will order some of your suggestions. And no I would not order some of those more "exotic" flavors. I'm still not sure about the English blends, they seem to be lacking a flavor profile that hits me. Altho I did have 4noggens put me down on there list the next time they have Penzance and Stonehaven available ( I have to try them because of all the chatter here about them) ,which I thought was very nice of them. I have been giving my tongue a rest, still trying to get that figured out. Oh, and I did pick up a cob so I could seperate my other pipes that I smoke with more aeromatics. Thanx for all the help. :)

Red Ryder, it's good that you're willing to give Sasieni and Presbyterian another try... I'd recommend several additional tries. It seems that the biggest complaint with first-time English/Balkan/Oriental blend smokers is that it absolutely blasts their mouths -- so you're not alone. The good news is that the blast furnace effect eventually passes (actually, it shouldn't take all that long for it to pass).

That said, don't overdo it, and definitely don't burn yourself out on what has to be one of the most enjoyable and broad-spectrum genres ever concocted. I love the stuff and I tend to go on jags with certain blends. And when it's a two- to three-day bender of all-day Sasieni (as much as six bowls a day), I'm no longer left with the physical discomfort you've described but, truth be told, my taste buds couldn't tell the difference between a glass of Louisiana Hot Sauce and a glass of milk (yes, hyperbole -- but I think you get the point).

Have fun

I am always open to trying new stuff.
It's always an adventure when i'm in a food store as i'm always picking up something that I havent tried before. My wife may not always agree, but I want to taste different things, same goes with tobaccos.
There is only one way to learn about taste.....taste it !

Red Rider,
I'm afraid my last reply came across too strongly.
I deleted most of it.
