I enjoy seeing commentary about pipes like this. The topic of super expensive pipes vs. everyday production pipes invariably creeps up from time to time on the various forums. For 95% of us this pipe is way beyond what we could afford. That said, I don't think the price is inappropriate considering the time and effort used to create it. Frankly it's more akin to a nice painting or expensive vase than a pipe. Art. Functional art.

The bowl dimensions are .76 X 1.47. Virginia, I'd say. Sooo, it looks like this -- A nifty little pipe? Or a perfectly functional, attractive briar, PLUS an interesting mess of tins to smoke in it, PLUS $1,000 in your pocket?

I often look at pipes like this, and yes, I appreciate the artistic effort. Who wouldn't? I also understand the covetous nature of humanity, as I am susceptible to it. Heck, I have a set of ivory chopsticks. They were expensive. They might even be illegal to own at this point. And I worry about damaging them, so they rarely get used. However, I find that my home made ones work as well to a point to shovel food into my waiting maw. Maybe I have outgrown the need for such extravagances. Perhaps my focus has changed from what it was in my youth. Food is preferable to a shiny plate sometimes....

Also, I can only imagine the effort put into a piece of art like this, and seriously, I'm not sure 1200 bucks would be enough motivation for me to attempt something like that.

WOW, you know I could purchase another RDPipes from our Ron Powell and have over $1,000 to spend on finishing my tobacco cellar. Or I could also make another great smoking pipe for under $75.00 with well aged Algerian or Grecian briar, which I personally prefer over most under aged Italian briar that's sold today. Being retired and on a budget I would not now or ever spend $1,200 on a pipe!! Nor any Larsen tobacco blend for that matter!

In the past few years I've purchased a number of Aldo Velani and T. Cristiano pipes for between $15.00 to $40.00 and all excellent smokers. Right now there is a seller on eBay that's selling many T. Cristiano pipes for $20.00 or best offer....all great pipes. Last month I offered $8.00 on a particular pipe I liked and he accepted. Will smoke it one day. Take a look on eBay.

Ozark, if you really want an example of an eye watering price for a pipe, try and find a Bo Nordh. Last one I saw was an estate. Sold just at 10k.

As a starving pipe maker, I guess I need to figure out how to break into that market....lol.

Not a fan of freestyles, but thought this was strangely appealing. And how did he cut it out? The block was left intact, or at least appears that way. Six grand, give or take.

Yeah, you and I would buy a dozen or more pipes for our personal use (plus some tobacco to boot) for the price of that one pipe, but maybe there's some guy thinking "Jeez...I could buy four Kitahara's for what they want for THIS PUPPY!!!"

Just looking at the picture of the above Freehand......let's say I won that pipe....I would finish cutting the pipe out with my hand coping saw. Not a fan of the way it looks, but ( à chacun leur propre ) to each their own!

It's already cut out. I was just wondering how it was cut out on the backside and removed without the block being compromised. Or am I missing something? Just an oddity; I don't want the dang thang. Backside:

Yup, it's particularly cut out.....I would cut thru all the way around and remove the two pieces. Would look much better, just my opinion. I could achieve that cut with a small fine router bit and use my Dremel/Router set up. Don't want the pipe, just wish I could hold it in my hands for a minute to give me a closer look.

Not saying anyone is wrong here, this is just my opinion.
And not saying I could make a better pipe or one in comparison but, I just don't see $1200 worth of pipe and I don't care who made it. There is also a realm of of reality and I live in it.........most the time.
Nor do I see $10K for anything smaller then a bread box.

He gave up before he finished the pipe. I wonder why? Maybe he fell ill? One will never know
